How effective is hypnotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

  • Evidence supports the use of either gut-directed hypnotherapy (GDH) or audiotape hypnotherapy, and one trial found these to be equally effective for IBS with response rates of 50%-75%.[ 21] GDH is more resource intensive than a self-directed audiotape, requiring 8-12 sessions that are ½ to 1 hour long. What are the symptoms of IBS?

  • You may have constipation, diarrhea, or urgency. Symptoms vary from person to person. IBS is the most commonly diagnosed disorder by gastroenterologists and is also seen very often by primary care physicians.

Do IBS patients have food intolerances?

A few people with IBS symptoms may have specific food-related conditions including lactose intolerance and celiac disease, but these are not common.
