Untitled THE THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR KARACHI GOLF CLUB MEMBERS Pakistan's top golfers will be seen in action in the 27th Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Open Golf Championship to be played at the picturesque Karachi Golf Club (KGC) from September 13 to 16. The CNS Open is counted among the most prestigious championships on the national golf calendar. Rear Admiral Muhammad Saleem Hl(M), Commander Karachi, will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the championship and will formally inaugurate the Championship carrying a lucrative prize basket of Rs11.1 million. ln addition, there is a brand new Toyota Fortuner for the first hole-in-one during the championship. The CNS Open has a rich history. ln 1995, Pakistan Navy instituted the CNS Open Golf Championship at KGC, to add a national level golf event on the calendar of Pakistan Golf Federation. Ever since, it has become a regular and major event on the national golf circuit. Such events provide a unique opportunity to showcase Paklstan's positive image to the world as a peace and sports loving nation and also promote healthy activities in the society. The regular conduct of this event is the manifestation of PN's commitment towards the promotion of golf at the national and international levels. This year's Championship will be played in the following eight categories: Professionals, Senior Professiona ls, J u n ior Professiona ls, Amateu rs, Seniors, Vetera ns,

Ladies and Juniors.

ln 2022, Pakistan's top professional Shabbir lqbal made history when he won the CNS Open for a record 13th time. After back-to-back par rounds in the second and third rounds, it seemed that lqbal had almost fallen out of the race for the title. After all, at a three-day aggregate of 2!3 C3), Shabbir was six shots behind the leader, Peshawar's

Muhammad Naeem going into the final round.

He was struggling with his driver and putter and it seemed that the final round would witness a battle between the likes of Naeem, Muhammad Munir and Hamza Amin for the coveted title. But Shabbir, by far the most successful golfer in Pakistan's history, almost always clicks when it matters the most. The seasoned professional from lslamabad fired a sizzling six-under-par 66 in the final round - the best score of the contest - to force a playoff against Munir and then won it to lift the prestigious trophy.

A player must ensure following on the course:(i) Not to treat the course as practice area. Golfers must avoid playing more than one ball on the course to hone their skills. lt only adds to unnecessary wear & tear to the course.(ii) Not to drive the Golf Carts in prohibited areas. (iii) Ensure that golf bags are not brought onto the green, and when removing Flagstick no damage is done to the surface of greens. (iv) Before leaving a bunker, member must carefully fill-up and smoothen over all holes and footprints made by him. (v) Always remember to fill divots and repair pitch marks on the greens.

Dear Members,

ln the arena of golf course management a lamentable state of affairs often befalls the members of golf courses. A situation that revolves around the lack thereof of equipment and the vexing absence of finances. lt is called a symphony of misfortune, an unholy alliance of two major shortcomings that would threaten the existence of any golf course, wherever it may be. The inadequacy of the required equipment dovetailed with the gilded specters of fiscal insufficiency is a threat of great magnitude. Golf courses cannot quench their thirst with the ethereal elixir of enthusiasm alone, nor can they sustain losses perpetually without dire consequences. At present we are seeing the advent of golf courses of the likes of Rumanza and Bahria Town and our gallant club and course is left parched and peering through the stained glass of longing. At present our need for basic equipment such as rough mowers (1 crore), a new fairway mower (1-.5 crore), 6 new green master cutting machines (2.70 crore), a new spraying machine (1.50 crore) and a first cut machine (1.20 crore) are of utmost urgency. Even in this rarefied air of leisurely pursuits, we cannot escape the tyranny of necessity. Without the tools our aspirations for this second home mean nothing. The need for finances is much maligned by the double impact of inflation and a decaying greens complex. As of now our club is headed for a major loss as all expenses have come to levels never seen before. Minimum wage requirement, cost of all inputs and cost of maintenance are now sending us hurtling to a record loss. However we aim to address all these major issues with a combination of an increase in subscription, a greens sponsorship programme and a major effort to increase revenue. The Club stands as an unwitting protagonist in a comedy of errors created by the winds of economic change visiting our beloved country at present. I assure you this committee is well aware of the dangers of today and tomorrow and we are hard at work addressing the issues at hand. All that is required is the support of the members in these testing times. As for present conditions, we have faced the advent of no sun for a six week stretch. A record for Karachi I am told. The sun has returned and so will the good condition on the course. Thank you for your patience.

Good golfing to you all.

The 116th edition of the Pritchard Cup, the

Soon after the Karachi Golf Club was

established in 1888, the first tournament was held for the Pritchard Cup donated by C.B Pritchard, lCS. Aspresident of the Sind Club in 1886-87

Mr Pritchard was actively involved in

establishing golf as a regular feature of the sports activities of the Sind Club.

For some odd reason this cup was

ordered from Perth, which remained the source of supply of medals and cups until 1896 when the Hamiltons opened a branch in Bombay.

By 1898 the Club had prospered to such

an extent that the cash money of the

Pritchard Cup was increased to Rs20

and the Honorary Secretary was given a discretionary allowance of Rs5 monthly towards employing a clerk. This year, Omar Khalid fired scores of 71and72 (one-under par 143) to win the

Pritchard Cup by six strokes. Arsalah Shikoh

Khan finished as the runner-up with an

aggregate of 749.

The Pritchard Cup turned out to be a keenly

contested encounter with leading players of the Club battling for the Club Champion title. ln the amateurs net category Cdr Asad

Yasin won the top honours with a net

aggregate of 143 while Maj lshtiaq Khattak finished as the runner-up.

Running concurrently with the Pritchard Cup

was Maj Gen Hayauddin Memorial Cup contested by the seniors. Played over two days, the event saw M.A. Mannan winning the title by seven strokes with a gross aggregate of 749. Khalid J. Siddiqi was the runner-up.
