COURSE OBJECTIVES:

This is a four skills

course that teaches listening, speaking, reading, and writing with a focus on communication. During this course you will learn how to talk about your friends and family, your courses, your living situation, and your leisure-time activities in French. To immerse you in the language from the beginning, only French will be spoken in class. You are not expected to understand every word. Try to follow the gist by paying attention to the context. You will find your comprehension increasing as the course progresses.

JUST DO IT! SPEAK UP!

This is a small community class in which you will get to know each other on a first name basis. It is a big mistake to refrain from speaking until you can produce complex sentences, or avoid making errors. Successful language learners are willing to take risks, to negotiate meaning. Don't always wait to be called on. Initiate. Ask questions. Follow-up on the comments of others. Say the unexpected. Silently answer all questions, including those not directed towards you. If you have trouble speaking up but still want to participate, let me know how I can help you. And finally, don't compare your French with your classmates'.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN THIS COURSE:

- Come to class regularly and be prepared for each class - Review daily material from previous weeks - Participate as actively as you can in French in class - When possible, work with one or several classmates - Memorize new vocabulary and learn to use the grammar sections and dictionaries as reference tools - Ask for help or advice when needed

DEPARTMENT ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular attendance is essential to your success in learning a foreign language.

If you miss a class,

it is your responsibility to complete the assignment and attend the next class fully prepared. Please find out from a classmate what is to be done or check our D2L site. Departmental

policy authorizes a deduction of 1 point per absence from the final exam score.

COURSE

REQUIREMENTS:

1. ATTENDANCE: This class will move at a brisk pace. A new topic with associated grammar and

vocabulary will generally be presented every day. In addition, your class participation grade is tied to your attendance. If you miss class because of illness you must provide a note from your doctor or the Health Center in order to be excused from class. Otherwise you will be counted absent.

2. PARTICIPATION: Your participation grade will be based on your oral work in class, a

combination of ability and overall effort. 3 . HOMEWORK/ JOURNAL: Daily homework will be assigned and collected at the beginning of each week.

Check D2L (Content

Devoirs) to see the list of daily homework assignments. Every assignment must include the following: your name, date, page, and exercise number. The answers to the exercises are located in the back of your textbook.

Check your own work and correct it

with contrasting ink after highlighting the mistake before turning in your homework.

NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

FR101, Fall 2016 Prof. Vera Klekovkina - Syllabus 3 You will also write 2-3+ full sentences almost daily to practice communicating in French in your journal. More details will be provided in class.

4. AUDIO-PRESENTATION: You will record 5 shorts video clips (50-60 seconds) speaking in

French about yourself and your hobbies, your family, the city you live in and your studies. This valuable language-learning technique helps develop oral communication and comprehension, since you will be required to comment in French or English to your classmates' recordings. You can use http://screencast-o-matic.com/ or D2L My Media. More instructions will be provided during the semester. 5 . COMPOSITIONS: You will write 3 compositions of gradually increasing length. All compositions are to be typed with the appropriate French accents and double-spaced. Of course compositions must be your own work. You are welcome to ask me questions before turning in your composition. Please do not use online translation as this practice goes against academic honesty principles. 6 . EXAMS: You will have 3 chapter exams on grammar and vocabulary; they will also include

questions on the readings and other materials presented in class. The oral part of each exam will take

place the day before.

7. FINAL EXAM: Your final exam will be in the format of a moderated discussion with the

instructor, like a typical French oral exam, and will take place during the last two days of the semester.

I will pass a sign-up sheet two weeks beforehand. We will prepare for this exam extensively at the end of the semester. I will also provide you with ample preparation about the format and the assessment of this task.

OFFICE HOURS:

I encourage you to visit me during my office hours to ask questions, practice your French, or get tips

for studying more effectively. GRADE CALCULATION: Your final grade will be calculated as follows:

Attendance 5%

Participation 10%

Homework & French journal 10%

Audiovisual presentations (4) 20%

Compositions (3) 10%

Chapter exams (3) 30%

Final oral exam 15%
