  • In order to reduce CO2 emissions in France's major cities, the most environmentally damaging vehicles are now banned from driving in certain urban areas called Low Emission Mobility Zones (ZFE-m). Vehicles not registered in France must also display an ecological sticker called Crit'Air.

In this guide we are advising you of the new regulations which have been introduced in France to tackle

pollution. The new regulations mean that you are now required to display a new vehicle emissions sticker in

your vehicle should you be travelling in Paris, Lyon, Lille, Marseille, Toulouse, Chambery, and Grenoble.

Why has the scheme been introduced?

The Crit'Air scheme requires all vehicles: cars, lorries, motorbikes and buses to display a windscreen sticker (vignette),

according to how much they pollute. The aim of the sticker system is to reduce emissions and air pollutants such as

the fine dust particles of nitrogen oxides (NOx), in the medium and long term.New and energy efficient vehicles will

be promoted and old polluting vehicles will be withdrawn from traffic little by little

How much do the stickers cost?

Stickers cost between 3.11€, plus postage and cover six categories ranging from the very cleanest (Crit'Air 1) electric

or hydrogen-powered vehicles to the dirtiest high polluting (Crit'Air 6). The categories relate to the six European

Union emission standards for cars dating back to 1992 when Euro -1 was introduced. Which sticker you require depends on the year of registration, the energy efficiency, and the vehicle's emission quantity.

The V5 is not required for lease vehicles as when you travel abroad we provide the VE103 and this can be scanned

and uploaded in replace of the V5. As the sticker can take up to 6 weeks to arrive, please print off the receipt that is

emailed after payment and take that with you. It also has a copy of the sticker and this can be used as proof of

payment. Are there penalties for not displaying the stickers? The penalty for failure to display a sticker while driving in Paris is an on -the-spot fine of between 68€and 135€.

Responsibility lies with the individual driver to check the Euro emissions standard of their vehicle are shown

here. Drivers will need to visit the official Crit'Air website and apply for a sticker for their vehicle. We'd recommend

drivers do this well before they intend to travel

This scheme has been introduced so that ultimately, those vehicles with the highest emissions face not being

allowed to drive in the city on days where pollution is particularly high. In the future vehicles may be banned from

driving in Crit'Air areas on certain days based on which sticker have, or which emissions category they fall into.

The table on the next page shows the six categories of sticker and the respective EURO emissions standard for

vehicles so you can see which sticker your vehicle requires.

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the sticker before you travel to avoid any fines. Crit'Air
