Florence

Wagnerwrotetheweeklycolumns from1949until1955.ArminandFlorenceWagner lived at7450McLellanDrive. From1955until 1958RuthMarquardtofAlexanderRoad wrotethecolumns. In1959HelenLaingwrotethearticles. JackandHelenLainglived at 160 Walton Road. Lastly,GeorgiaPacewrotethecolumns from 1960 to1963.Georgia andBenPace's home isat17836 South

MeadowparkDrive.

Ludwig

ShanerConelly,owner ofTheConellyRealtyCo.,collected the "UpinWaltonHills with

Country

Jane"articles,plusotherarticles,fliersandphotos of this partofBedfordTownship.General

Conelly gave

and then in1980turnedeverything over toJoeMazzoneofCarmanyDrive. In1985VirginiaMazzone gave thescrapbookmaterial to Jean and Bob KainsingerofOrchardHillDrive.

In 1999

theKainsingersassembledlhecollection of dataintoalbumslabeled "UpinWaltonHills." Thealbumsincludeadditionalnewspaperarticlesandphotoscollected bymanyotherlocalresidents. The albumsarechuck-full ofanassortmentofmaterialoflocalinterest.

Roadshundredsofacres of oldfarmfields satidle.Conelly's idea wastosubdividethepropertiesintolarge lots and help the landowners sellofftheiracreage nottofarmers, but tocityfolkswhowantedtobuildhouses in a country atmosphere.Conellystarted afilecalled"Walton Hills:

Conelly's

fileincludedtheweekly "Up inWaltonHillswithCountryJane"columnsthatappeared in the

Bedford77mes-Registerfrom1949-1963.Theseuniqueandlengthyarticles documented the livesofvillagersduring

thoseyears. Theywerewritten byasuccessionoffourlocalresidents,allunderthebylineCountryJane:"Florence

Wagner

from1949-1955, Ruth Marquardtfrom1955-1958,HelenLaing in 1959andGeorgia Pacefrom1960-1963.

Shortly

before he died in1963,Conellyhanded overhiscollection tohisfriendBettyWalton, the wife of our first

PoliceChiefSterlingWalton.Betty not only putthepapers in a scrapbook,shedonatedJeffersonWalton'sCivil

War DischargePaperandotherWaltonfamilyrelicsandcontinued tocollectpertinentmaterial. In 1980sheturned everything over to JoeMazzone, and he too continued toadditemsoflocalinterest In1985VirginiaMazzone, Joe's widow, gave thescrapbooks to Jean andBobKainsingerforsafe-keeping, andthecollectionkeptgrowing. The few villagers who knewaboutthisuniquecollectionofhistoriclocalitems feltthepapersshouldbestored inapublic place,readilyaccessibletoeveryone. Our currentVillageHallCommunityRoom,completed in 1972,hasnarrowhand-craftedshowcases and deep hand-craftedcabinets. Forthefirst16yearstheshowcase were not used and the cabinets held an add

assortmentoftrophies. In 1988aCouncilcommittee askedJeanKainsingertodecorateandfill-up theshowcases

and cabinets withitemsoflocal interest. Bob andJeanKainsingertransferredthescrapbookmaterialintoacid-free pages, assembled them into4albums,anddonatedthecollection totheVillage.Thehistoricitemswerefinally on display in apublicplace.

With approval from

theVillage,theWaltonHillsHistoricalResourceCenterbecameareality in 1999.

Ever since,

asmallgroupofvolunteersstafftheWaltonHillsHistoricalResourceCenter.Residentscontinue to donate photos,letters, articles, old mapsandotherrelies to theHistoricalCenter,andtodaytheCommunity Room show cases andcabinetsarepacked.an.a...9..p 11

Origins of

theWaltonHillsHistoricalResourceCenter

1. Beginning in

the193Os, L.S.Conelly,alocalRealtor-Developer,startedacollection of articles, fliersandphotosthatrelated to the Walton Hills" partofBedfordTownship. 2. Yearslater L.S.Conelly gavethematerialstoBettyWalton. Betty

Walton putthepapers inascrapbook,andcontinuedcollectingmaterial.3. In1980BettyWaltonturnedeverything over toJoeMazzone.

4. In1985VirginiaMazzone,JoeMazzone'swidow, gavethescrapbook to Jean and Bob

Kainsinger.

5. The

currentVillageHallCommunityRoom,whichwascompleted in 1972, hasnalowhand-craftedshowcases anddeephand-craftedcabinets.

For the first

16years, theshowcaseswereempty andthecabinets held afewtrophies.

6. WhenBobKainsinger wasinCouncil,the12years from1988through 1999,

he asked Jeantodecorateandfill-uptheCommunity Roomshowcasesandcabinets with items oflocalinterest.

7. In 1999theKainsingerstransferredthescrapbookmaterialintoacid-freepages,

assembled them into MUp inWaltonHills"albums, donated thealbums totheVillage, and put them in theCommunityRoomcabinets.

8.Withapproval fromtheVillage,theWaltonHillsHistoricalResourceCenterbecameareality.
