A group home is a private residence for children or young people who cannot live with their families, or people with chronic disabilities who may be adults or seniors. Typically there are no more than six residents and there is at least one trained caregiver there twenty-four hours a day.
  • Do assisted living facilities have to be licensed in Michigan?

Special Note: The State of Michigan does not license assisted or independent living facilities. Please note, however, that a Home for the Aged or Adult Foster Care Home license may be required if the level of care provided at the facility meets the licensing requirements of one of these license types.
  • Instructions

1 Determine the Regional Center that serves the area in which you want to open a group home. 2 Contact your local Community Care Licensing (CCL) office. 3 Apply for a license. 4 Contact the Regional Center serving your county.
