1 AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN THE ISLE OF MAN, NORTHERN IRELAND AND SCOTLAND 1913 - 2019.

T. N. Hancock

As a retired librarian I have long been aware that all aspects of local history should be recorded for the benefit

of future generations and this is my attempt to cover just one of those aspects; it will surprize many people to

know that a minimum of some 5,700 aircraft have crashed and been written-off (eg, did not fly again) in the

Isle of Man, Northern Ireland & Scotland, since powered flight began and this list attempts to give the bare

details of these - it should be emphasised that these are the crashes that resulted in the aircraft being destroyed,

NOT those, of which there were many, which crash-landed, were salvaged by 23 MU Aldergrove, 56 MU

Inverness and 57 MU Wig Bay, repaired at civilian repair factories, such as those in this area at Airdrie, Balado

Bridge, Greenock and Prestwick and then flew again. USAAF aircraft were repaired, or modified, at the large

Air Base Depot at Langford Lodge. I use the words this list attempts to cover advisedly as the recording of

these crashes was down, quite frequently, to the whim of an RAF/FAA/USAAF clerk who may have made mistakes in locations and other details.

It is intended that this list will give a basis for further research to those interested in a particular crash.

Newspaper reports on wartime crashes are rare but those in peacetime may carry an account in the local

press. Each entry gives the aircrafts serial number, its type, its unit and that units home airfield (with the

county if not in the area covered) and the number of fatal casualties if known; it should be remembered that a

great many young airmen died in these crashes (signified [where known] by a number followed by k after the

appropriate entry), often in horrific circumstances and also, occasionally, civilians or ground personnel on the

ground ( shown as + after the aircrew deaths). Civilian aircraft have their registration, type and location of

crash given. Airfields covered in this volume (dates are those within which flying took place)

SOURCES

This list is compiled from the information given in many books published by Air-Britain Historians Ltd, and the

volumes of Bomber Command Losses by W. R. Chorley, and Coastal Command Losses, published by

Midland Books. Two web-sites also proved very useful for the American WW2 crashes - accident-report.com

and www.aviationarchaeology.com.

WORLD WAR 1

The crashes listed under World War One are nowhere near comprehensive, either in number or in their exact

locations which were often not recorded; however, as can be seen in later periods, most crashes took place at or

near aerodromes, during the demanding tasks of take-off and landing. Thus, many of the below did happen at

being killed, particularly flying the tricky Sopwith Camel. The RNAS had bases all around the coast from the

Tweed to the Irish Sea from which were mounted anti-submarine patrols by aeroplanes, seaplanes and airships

while the RFC patrolled against Zeppelin raids from the Tweed to Edinburgh. 1914
