Coroners Court - ACT Magistrates Court

Findings A Coroner holding an inquest must find if possible: the identity of the deceased;; when and where the death happened;

  • What are the 4 inquest questions?

    The purpose of the inquest is (a) to identify the medical cause of death, and (b) to answer four questions: who died, when and where did she die, and (perhaps most important of all) how did she come by her death, and (c) come to a conclusion about her death. 5.
    . This is not a trial.
    . Nobody (no organisation) is on trial.
  • What are conclusions at inquest?

    Rather than a verdict, the Coroner now makes 'findings of fact' about who the deceased was, when and where they died and the medical cause of their death. The answer to the 'how the person came by their death' is known as the conclusion.
  • What are examples of inquest?

    In general usage, inquest is also used to mean any investigation or inquiry.
    . An inquest uses witnesses, but suspects are not permitted to defend themselves.
    . The verdict can be, for example, natural death, accidental death, misadventure, suicide, or murder.
  • Possible outcomes include: natural causes; accident; suicide; unlawful or lawful killing; industrial disease and open verdicts (where there is insufficient evidence for any other verdict).
    . Sometimes a coroner uses a longer sentence describing the circumstances of the death, which is called a narrative verdict.
