For Better Living in Japan

Qɿ

Hi there. I'm new to Japan. Would you mind if

I asked you a couple of questions?

Aɿ

Sure, no problem.

Qɿ

You speak very good Japanese.

Aɿ

Why, thank you. But I still have a long way to

go. Twice a week I go to the Japanese language class given by the International Association.

Qɿ So why did you decide to study Japanese?

Aɿ Because I wanted to be able to read and understand notices from my daughter's school. One day my daughter came up to me and said, "Mama, my teacher said I have to let her know by today whether or not you're going to attend the parents' day." But I had no idea what she was talking about.... Qɿ Oh, so that was something that was written in a notice, right? AɿYes, that's right. Right after that, I decided I had to enroll in a Japanese language class. I still have a long way to go, but now I can read things like notices from my kid's school no problem. Qɿ

Hello. Are you a student?

Aɿ

Yes, I go to a Japanese language school.

Qɿ

Really? Have you had any crazy language mix-

ups? Aɿ

Let me think for a moment - ah yes, here's one.

When I went for my part-time job interview, the store manager told me to bring in my "kyokasho." So, I went back with a "kyokasho." So then he said, "I asked you to bring your 'kyokasho,' so why did you bring your 'kyokasho' instead"?

Qɿ I don't get it?
