A study on child labour in India

1and J. Pavithra2AbstractChild labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes

with their ability to attend regular school, and that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and

harmful. This practice is considered exploitative by many international. Legislations across the world prohibit

child labour. Underage children work at all sorts of jobs around the world, usually because they and their families

are extremely poor. Large numbers of children work in commercial agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, mining,

and domestic service. Some children work in illicit activities like the drug trade and prostitution or other traumatic

activities such as serving as soldiers.

Introduction Child labour takes place when children are forced to work at an age when they are expected to work, study and enjoy their phase of innocence. It implies lost or deprived childhood that leads to exploitation of children in various forms: mental, physical, social, sexual and so on. The society, voluntary organizations and law-makers have an obligation to put an end to the evil practice of child labour in India. Not all children in India are lucky to enjoy their childhood. Many of them are forced to work under inhuman conditions where their miseries know no end. Though there are laws banning child labour, still children continue to be exploited as cheap labour. It is because the authorities are unable to implement the laws meant to protect children from being engaged as labourers.2. Review of Literature Dak, T.M. (Eds.) 2012, Child Labour in India, Serials Publi- cations, pp. 24-25. He observed that "Child labour largely depends upon nor- mative attitudes towards children in society, the culturally determined roles and functions of children, the values by which the activities of children are judged and the nature of socialization process. In industrialized countries, there is general disapproval of participation of school age children in the formal labour force. The participation of children in housework is approved, by parents at least. In many countries, participation in various types of economic activities from an early age is considered as an essential part of socialization.3. Objectives

1. To Study the child labour in India.

2. To know about the percentage of child labour at present

in India.

3. To know whether child labour is increased or decreased

in India.4. Research Methodology

Research design :

Descriptive type of research has been adopted for this research and description of a phenomenon or characteristics associated with the population are also dealt with.

Collection of data :

A study on child labour in India - 830/830Considerable data has also been taped from previous re- search papers and websites.5. Findings Children have the right to a joyful childhood. Every child has the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment with protection and guidance from their guardians. Whether in the cities or in villages, at home or in schools, a child is always a child and deserves a childhood free from exploitation and abuse.6. Suggestions

1. Parents should be helped financially.

2. Basic educations should be given to the children.

3. Law enforcement agencies should be made active.7. Conclusion

Government authorities and civil society organizations need to work in tandem to free children engaged in labour under abysmal conditions. They need to be rescued from exploitative working conditions and supported with adequate education. Above all, there is a need to mobilize public opin- ion with an aim to bring about an effective policy initiative to abolish child labour in all its forms.References [1] Dak, T.M.
