After a review of the problem of predicting foreign language success this booklet describes the development refinement and validation of a battery of

  • What is the military method for learning a language?

In ALM, only the target language is spoken by the teacher, and students are expected to learn the patterns through mechanical repetition. Language labs were a big part of the methodology. Students would sit in cubicles, listening and repeating, often recording their voices and listening to the playback.
  • What foreign languages are critical to the military?

Arabic, Chinese, Pashto, Farsi, Russian, and Korean are the languages most in-demand in the military. Every intelligence agency and branch of the armed forces has its own career and language requirements, but every linguist working within the military undergoes the same screening process.
  • How much does the military pay for FLPP?

Depending on how they test, servicemen and women can earn between $100 and $500 per month for a single foreign language or dialect. FLPP is payable in addition to all other pay and allowances, but members are not authorized to receive both FLPP I (Career Linguist) and FLPP II (Non-Career) simultaneously.
  • Courses last from 36 to 64 weeks, depending on the difficulty of the language. DLIFLC is a multi-service school for active and reserve components, foreign military students, and civilian personnel working in the federal government and various law enforcement agencies.
