Welcome

EAGE President"s Welcome

These are extraordinary times for EAGE. Our mem-

bers involved in the oil and gas industry are facing unprecedented challenges to the value of their dis- ciplines in the persistent low oil price environment.

This is why I believe that our 79

th

EAGE Conference &

Exhibition in Paris on 12-15 June 2017 is an especially important occasion in our history. It is an opportunity for professionals in the geoscience and engineering community worldwide to come together at our unique multi-disciplinary event. They will be able to review the economic realities we face and hope- fully discuss in depth how new technology, better practice and integrated solutions can turn the current downturn into an opportunity. Our conference theme ‘Energy, Technology, Sustainability - Time to open a new Chapter" should be a rallying call not just for our members but for many government, commercial and academic professionals. Parties who are interested in the future progress of geoscience and engineering appl i- cations in the world which is not just confined to the oil and gas indus try. In Paris, with our much appreciated sponsors, we will provide an unri- valled experience for participants. It is centered around a three-day technical programme of oral and poster presentations. In addition, the schedule includes executive sessions, workshops, short courses and a field trip all designed to provide professionals with the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of an industry where the economic model may have changed forever. We are of course delighted that we will again be collaborating with SPE EUROPEC to ensure that a broad range of geosci- ence and engineering topics are covered. One goal this year will be to add some more geological emphasis to the mix. Our annual event is known for its inclusiveness and 2017 will be no ex- ception. We will continue with our increasingly popular special interest meetings for women in geoscience and engineering and young profes- sionals. A major emphasis will also be given to the student programme recognizing that a new generation of professionals is urgently needed to help meet the implications of the ‘great crew change". I would venture to say that in providing knowledge and motivation to students, no one does it better than EAGE with activities and opportunities to network with peers and future employers. We will of course be inviting delegates to our icebreaker reception and legendary conference evening for everyone to meet in a less formal atmos phere. But let us not forget that with the help of our local advisory commit- tee, we are staging our Annual Meeting in Paris. This is a special location and I sincerely hope that participants will enjoy the history, culture and la belle vie of France"s capital. I look forward to seeing you there. A bientôt!

SPE President"s Welcome

Welcome to the 79

th

Conference & Exhibition of the

European Association of Geoscientists and Engi-

neers in Paris, France incorporating SPE EUROPEC.

Paris 2017 is the largest and most comprehensive

geoscience event in the world and continues to im- prove its exemplary programmes and knowledge sharing. The theme this year is ‘Energy, Technology,

Sustainability - Time to open a new chapter".

Now is the ideal time to open a new chapter. History has shown that our industry tends to make technology leaps during hard times because we are forced by economics to innovate. By attending next year"s con- ference, you will be part of this rebirth of technical oversight. Technical categories for presentations include: CO 2 sequestration and natural gas storage

Decision risk analysis and managing uncertainty

EOR/IOR strategies and recovery optimisation

Integrated asset development solutions including meeting economic, environmental, and social criteria

Integrated dynamic modelling

Rejuvenating mature fields

Reservoir surveillance and management

Unconventional resources

Well performance and optimization

Sustainability and environmental protection through responsible opera- tions are vital components of energy and technology. Sustainability means considering the full life cycle of our operations and during Paris 2017 you will have the opportunity to network with leaders in sustainable develop ment. Over the course of the three-day conference, you can attend training courses and workshops along with key sessions designed for students, young professionals and women in the geoscience and engineering in- dustry. And of course, I encourage you to visit the exhibition that show- cases more than 350 companies where you can interact with cutting edge technology and meet the people behind the products. Paris 2017 is the place to be inspired by new technology, new sustainable innovations - a new chapter. I look forward to seeing you there.

About Paris

Paris is the capital of France and one of the largest cities in Europe. It is a city filled with iconic architecture, great works of art and many char- acteristic quartiers. The history is still visible in the grandeur of the city with monuments such as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame and the Louvre. There is also a more modern, contemporary side to Paris, which includes the complex building Centre Pompidou and Musée du Quai Branly. Paris offers excellent food, great shopping and the promise of an unforgettable visit, which makes it a perfect location to host our 79
