1 1/2 http://lascarbx.labex.u-bordeaux.fr/ JUNIOR CHAIR International Call for highly qualified and motivated junior scientists 2016 - LaScArBx Cluster of excellence Description of the Cluster of Excellence The LaSc ArBx Cluster of Excellence brings together three joint research lab oratories (UMR) of the Universities of Bordeau x working in the f ield of Archaeology (UMR 5607 AUS ONIUS, UMR 5060 IRAMAT-CRP2A, UMR 5199 PACEA). It is the only one in France in uniting such a range of "archaelogical sciences" and covering such a chronological field (Archaeology, History, Prehistory, Classical Studies, Biological Anthropology, Archaeom aterials, Palaeoenvironment, Rock Art, Archaeotechnology). The LaScArBx's general objectives and the characteristics of the three associated laboratories are described at: http://lascarbx.labex.u-bordeaux.fr/ The LaScArBx research topic is entitled "Using the world in ancient societies: process and forms of appropriation of space in Long Time". This focus on "space" is not in itself original (archaeology has always consisted in studying how past societies interacted with their environments, natural or cultural, as well as the consequences of these interactions). However, the chronological scale of the subject (from Prehistory to the Middle Ages and even beyond in several areas), its spatial extent (across several continents), the diversity and combination of the disciplines and skills carried out constitute the specific strengths of this project: "space" is considered and understood in all the senses of the word (environment, place, territory), over the long term and across the diversity of its interactions with Man, these being documented by the entire range of archaeological sciences. This theme is channeled through three routes (1. Settlement and territories, 2. Exploitation, innovation, exchange, 3. Expressions of the symbolic and spaces of memory), each of t hem deal ing with the relationship between Man and the space that surrounds him. These themes are described at: http://lascarbx.labex-univ-bordeaux.fr/Le-programme-scientifique-LaScArBx/r164.html Call for applications LaScArBx Cluster of exce llence is offering a Junior Chair (equivalent to Assi stant Professorship) attached to the associated laboratories AUSONIUS, IRAMAT-CRP2A, PACEA. We aim to attract in Bordeaux a junior scientist, either French or foreign, whose work shows a level of excellence already recognized internationally, by providing means to undertake an ambitious research project with a visible impact. We seek a creative researcher with a strong interest in the development of our interdisciplinary programme. In order to match the programme standards, applicants have to submit an innovative research proposal, dealing with the following topic: *Neolithic societies The challenge will be to fill the chronological gap that exists within the LaScArBx between Paleolithic and Protohistory related researches, with a specific concern for the development of diachronic and interdisciplinary studies on Neolithic societies. As a consequence, we are looking for a young scientist of recognized experience in this field, as well as able and willing to work with researchers from the 3

2/2 laboratories. We expect applicants to submit proposals dealing with one or more of the following themes: migrations and mobility, settlements, territorial organization, technical practices and symbolic activity, exploitation of natu ral resources in relat ion with environmental settings, computation of a reliable chronological framework. The proposals must also relate to the same geographical areas as the LaScArBx program. Applicants will have also to demo nstrate that they are able to parti cipate to academic teaching, through the organization of seminars. Location, duration and appointments The duration of the stay is of one year (renewable twice, for a maximum period of three years), starting January 2017. In addition to an attractive salary (€43,500 gross per year), a travel allowance and research funds (10 k€ for the first year, 7 k€ for the second and third one) will be provided. The Junior Chair will also be assisted in preparing applications for National and European funding programs (ANR, ERC...) and/or for a French academic research position. He/She will be given a personal workspace in the host laboratory and a free access to on-campus facilities including technolo gical equipment available in the LabEx laboratories (Microscopies, Microtomography, Radiology, Spectroscopies, XRD, Palaeogenetic, Micromorphology, Dating Methods, Digital Humanities, GIS...) Eligible applicants This position is reserved for recognized junior researchers, of any nationality, who have completed their doctoral degree less than 10 years ago. They must have got at least one post-doctoral position. French applicants are expected to have got some doctoral or postdoctoral experience abroad. Procedure and Timetable Applicants have to send their p roposals by email to Sylvie Male ret (sylvie.maleret@u-bordeaux-montaigne.fr) before November 18th 2016. Proposals should include the following elements within a single PDF file (single spaced Arial 11): - Summary of the project (up to 5 pages including objectives and methodology, highlighting the novelty, originality and feasibility of the project as well as the added value to LaScArBx) - Description of past and present research activities (up to 4 pages) - CV - complete list of publications - 2 letters of recommendation from senior scientists The preselected applicants will be invited for an interview in December 2016. The successful applicant is expected to start working in Bordeaux on January 2017.
