Red (tricky)

Words We use a combination of the Ruth MiskinRead Write IncPhonics Scheme and the DfELetters & Sounds Document. A red word is a word that you can not sound out phonetically (Fred Talk) for examplego, my, all, etc. The children may need adult help to understand that in red words some of the letters make a different sound to what we would expect. It may help to explain that if you sound out (phonetically) a red word it will become a nonsense word.

Guidance Sheet

It is important your child can both read and write red words; the best way to support this is by reading the words on daily basis and by encouraging your child to write the red words as often as possible. It is important your child can use the red word within a sentence. Encourage your child to say a sentence after reading each red word. It is important to stress that all children progress at different rates when learning to read and write.
