This is the first story in a two-

part series highlighting one veteran"s story through the

Battle of Hong Kong, which

marks its 78th anniversary this

December.

I n a 15-year project focusing on family history, Vancouver collector Michael Souza is us-

ing currency and stamps to tell the story of his late father, who was a veteran of the Battle of Hong Kong.

Born in Hong Kong on July

12, 1921, Henry Souza joined

the Hong Kong Volunteer De fence Corps (HKVDC) at the age of 18, only a year before

Nazi Germany's invasion of

Poland fanned the flames of

war.

“I've been able to blend that

in with the life of my father, who was one 14,000 in the ‘De fence of Hong Kong,' so it's a mixture of family history with a numismatic and philatelic bent to it," said the younger

Souza, who has been a mem

ber of the North Shore Nu mismatic Society since 1988 and currently serves as its president, secretary and treasurer.

Although Souza's father

rarely spoke about his war- time experiences, his legacy has been kept alive through his son's diligent digging.

In 1841, amid a losing effort

in the First Opium War, Chi na's Qing dynasty agreed to a rough outline of the Treaty of Volume 57 • Number 17

A pair of coins marking a quarter-century of Toronto Raptors basketball is among 15 new issues released by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of its November numismatic ca talogue. Celebrating the Raptors' 25th season, which began on Oct. 22 with a 130-122 overtime win over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans, two 2020-dated coins were issued along with the rest of the Mint's latest catalogue on Nov. 5. Both coins are only available in Canada. A one-ounce silver coin with a face value of $25 features the original Raptors logo, which was used between the 1995-96 and 2007-08 seasons. The coin's reverse is coloured in the logo's original red, purple, black and silver colours and features a stylized rendition of a basketball. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Su- sanna Blunt. The coin, whose package also includes an NBA authenticity hologram, has a weight of 31.39 grams, a diameter of 39 millimetres and a mintage of 8,500 pieces.

A 25-cent nickel-plated steel coin of

fers what the Mint describes as “an af fordable alternative" for fans and col lectors alike.

It features the current Raptors logo -

a basketball with a claw mark - encircled by the team name. This logo was introduced in December 2014, replacing the 2008 up date to the team's original logo.

Formed nearly 70 years ago,

the Royal Canadian Numismatic

Association (RCNA) has seen its

services continue to evolve along with the world around it.

But with a dwindling mem

bership and financial losses re ported in the past two fiscal years - $7,500 in 2017-18 and nearly $6,000 in 2018-19 - the

RCNA has taken "cost-cutting

measures" to alleviate some of the strain, according to First

Vice-President Rob Turner.

How these cuts will affect

member services remains to be seen, but officials remain com- mitted to "serving those who enjoy coin collecting and nu mismatics by promoting fel- lowship, communication, edu cation and providing advocacy and leadership for the hobby."One of the areas of concern, however, is

“We continue to have an up

ward pressure on costs," said

CN Journal Editor Henry Nien-

2015 until this summer's con

vention in Calgary.

Each bi-monthly issue of the

journal commands a cost of about $5,000, which includes printing and mailing to RCNA members. But while these costs are only likely to increase going forward, there are other ways of ensuring members receive the journal each month.

1GEORGE V SPECIMEN “DOT" 10

CENTS 1936 SP63+ PCGS

Royal Canadian Mint, KM23a. Dot on reverse. An absolute wonder, and one of only three 1936 Dot 10 Cents that exists outside of museum collections. This Specimen, previously part of the Dominion Collection, features bold details with rich gold and charcoal patina over smooth sur faces. As with the Belzberg coin, this piece does not have the protective lacquering typically seen on the 1936 Dot cents, and thus the surfaces show forms of handling. The background regarding the Dot issues (Cent, 10 Cents, and 25 Cents) relates to the passing of George V and the abdication of the throne by Edward VIII. It was commonplace for the bust of the king, in this case George V, to remain on coinage through the remainder of the calendar year, while the creation of dies for the new king was underway. However, Edward VIII's abdication on December 10, 1936 halted production of the obverse, leaving less than 30 days to decide how to handle the fol- lowing year's currency, and not enough time to complete obverse dies for successor George VI. The result was to continue using the ef gy of George V, but to add a dot on the reverse--either below the date, as it is on the 1936 Cent, or below the bow on the wreath as it is on the 10 and

25 Cents-to con rm the issuance was for 1937. Despite the shortage of

these denominations, the Cent and 10 Cents were never released into circulation, with speculation that the whole of the mintages were melted. Though, that was not the case, as there are three known examples of the

1936 Dot Cent and 4 known of the 1936 Dot 10 Cents. This particular

coin was discovered in 2000 when it was sold by a mint employee to a private collector. Understandably, each time this classic Canadian rarity makes an appearance at auction, a great amount of interest is generated, and we expect no different for this miraculous survivor. Ex.
