Singin' In The Rain - Gene Kelly - Notes y Activity types: Vocabulary (weather), listening for specific words, gap fill, miming, watching films y Language: Word formation (adjectives); talking about the weather; Present Continuous y Level: Elementary (suitable for Primary school) y Notes: Singin' in the Rain is the title song of the 1952 comedy musical film starring Gene Kelly,

Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds and directed by Kelly and Stanley Donen, with Kelly also

providing the choreography. It offers a comic depiction of Hollywood's transition from silent films to

"talkies". The song has been featured in numerous films such as Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. Frank Sinatra's version of the song is also very popular. (based on Wikipedia)

1. Explain to students they are going to learn/repeat words about the weather. Draw the

following 4 objects on the board: a cloud, an umbrella with raindrops, rain with a lightning and a sun. Elicit their names. Key: cloud, rain, storm, sun

2. Show students how to form adjectives deriving from the previous words and let them infer

the rule. Key: cloud - cloudy; rain - rainy; storm - stormy; sun - sunny You can add more words and let the students try: wind - windy; snow - snowy; fog - foggy To help students practise these words you can ask them simple questions like: - What's the weather like today? - Who likes rain? - Do you prefer rainy or sunny weather? - Are you happy when it's sunny/rainy?

3. Hand out the worksheet and ask students to fold the page so they cannot see the lyrics.

Explain they are going to listen to a song which contains some words about the weather. Ask students to listen for the words in ex 1 and circle them. They can number them in the order they hear them (if they appear more than once, refer to the first time). Point out they may have to change the form (singular/plural). Play the song.

Key: 1.rain 2.clouds 3.sun 4.stormy

4. Unfold the worksheet. Before playing the song again, ask students to fill in the gaps with

the missing words, based on their answers to the previous activity.

5. Play the song again. Students check their answers in pairs.

6. Correct in open class, play the song and sing together!

7. Grammar focus: Present Continuous. Write on the board the word SING, then mime

the action and say/write "I'm singing". Repeat with LAUGH and DANCE. Students will enjoy this! Let them infer how to express actions in progress. Write other verbs like EAT, DRINK, READ, WRITE, SLEEP. Ask students to mime in turn and try to make correct sentences.

8. Show students the film "Singin' In The Rain".
