I.ThebooknowpresentedtoEnglishreaders
so,buttheveryexistenceofithasremainedun- hundredyears,althoughitwasprintednoless thanfivetimesinthecourseofthesixteenth century.
Whatisit,andwhyisitworthrevivingafterso
longaperiodofoblivion?ItisaBiblehistory, tothedeathotSaul.Ithascometousonlyin aLatintranslation(madefromGreek,andthat thenameofthegreatJewishphilosopherofthe convenientshorttitle.
Itsimportanceliesinthis,thatitisagenuine
andunadulteratedJewishbookofthefirstcentury - aproductofthesameschoolastheFourthBook' ofEsdrasandtheApocalypseofBaruch^and destructionofJerusaleminA.D.70.Itisthus contemporarywithsomeoftheNewTestament writings,andthrowslightuponthemaswellas 7 ;g^:c-c'/r^c*'Introduction
