Bytheendofthedecade,thenewassociationhadlaiddownby-law forit governance,hadwelcomedninenewnationalitie ,andhadadoptedprinciple thatwouldguideitforyear tocome.Withtheasblcharter,theproce ofintegratingtheInternationalBazaarintothewiderLuxembourgcommunityinten ified,in piringgreatloyaltyinit volunteer .For everalLuxembourgfamilie ,member hipintheSteeringCommitteei averylong- tandingtradition-overfourdecade forEricandEnidIsaac; panningtwogeneration forCynthiaAlbrechtanddaughter-in-lawCarolinaLazo,HaydeeFischbachand onFranci coBenavente,MadeleineFleschanddaughterColette,Françoi eHarfanddaughter DanielleandMarie-Hélène,ElianeKaraguillaanddaughterTanyaGabbay,andJuttaKoegeland onArmin.Remarkably,theElvingerfamilyha ervedtheInternationalBazaarforthreegeneration !NicolasElvingerandhischildren,JosetteandJean-Paul-andgrand-children,ThierryandJoëlle-havebeenauditorsandlegaladvisorstotheIBLsince1967.MaryEstelleElvinger-McKenna,wifeofNicola ´cou inPierre,wa oneofanenthu ia ticandinfluentialgroupofearlyIBLvolunteer :theyoung,foreign-bornwive ofnativeLuxembourger .Inanerainwhichwomenfollowedtheirhu band - ometime abandoningcareeropportunitie forwhichtheyhad pentyear of tudy-anumberoftalentedandenergeticyoungwomenfoundintheIBLnewfriend andacau ethattheycouldembrace.Al oamongthe ewereUrsulaKrieps,MaureenStoll,andtwowomenwho e erviceduringthecomingdecade wouldproveextraordinary:EbbaLamoureuxandHuguetteRischard.Thi year,a wecelebrateour50thAnniver ary,weal ohonour50yearsofservicetotheInternationalBazaarbyEbbaLamoureux,whoattendedthe1960Bazaara ayoungbride-to-be,becameavolunteerin1961andwa electedtotheExecutiveCommitteein1968.A Trea urer ince1968andVice-Pre ident ince1980,EbbaLamoureuxha beenthevaluedadvi orandcolleagueofthreepre ident oftheInternationalBazaar.HuguetteRischardwaselectedpresidentofthenewassociationatitsfirstAGMin1968, ervinguntil2002when hebecamePré idented'Honneur.EbbaLamoureuxcharacterize thethirty-fiveyearpre idencyofHuguetteRi charda aperiodofexpan ionoftheInternationalBazaar-not implyin izebut,beyondit originalcoreofchurchandEECvolunteer ,towelcomenewStandHead withavarietyofbackground ,intere t andnationalitie whichwouldbereflectedinStand ofgrowingdiver ity.Thecharitie upportedannuallybytheBazaarwouldal ogrowbothinnumber anddiver ity-andtheprinciple andprocedure bywhichtheywerecho enwouldbelaiddown.The izeandimportanceoftheHonoraryCommitteewouldgrowa thediplomaticcommunitylent upportandpre tige.Widepre coverageoftheannualbazaar andtheceremonie inwhichtheirproceed weredi tributed(Remisedeschèques)becameroutine, ignallingthegrowinge teeminwhichtheorganizationwa held.HuguetteRi chardwa a trongadvocatefortheIBLandaneffectiverepre entativeofit manymember -becoming,intime,thepublicfaceoftheInternationalBazaar,decoratedforherworkbyGrande-Duche eJo éphineCharlottewiththeOrdredelaCouronnedeChêne(1992),distinguishedasChevalierdel'OrdreduMéritedelaFrance,andrecipientofthePrixFemmesd'Europe(1997).Theyounga ociationgrewrapidlyduringMadameRi chard' fir tyear a it pre ident.Foreightyear (1961-68)theHighAuthorityfortheCoalandSteelUnionhadmadetheFoyerEuropéenavailablefortheannualbazaarbut,by1969,with20Stand andever-increa ingcrowd ,theeventneededmoreroom.L'ÉcoleProfe ionelleprovidedonlytemporaryre pite.In1972,theInternationalBazaarbeganitslongassociationwiththeFoireInternationaldeLuxembourg(renamedLuxExpoin2004).In1974,followingtwoyear atthehall inLimpert berg,theInternationalBazaarmovedwiththeFILtoKirchberg,wheretheannualbazaari nowatraditionofnearly40year .ThebazaarsoftheSwingingSixtiesandSeventieswereafternoonevent ,openfor3-4hour onaSaturdayorSunday,followedbyabuffetanddancingtolivemu icoradi cothèque.By1979,thebazaarwa openfrom9:00amto8:00pmandthe oiréewentonuntilmidnight!Therewere37Stand andtheproceed forcharityexceeded4millionLuf.In1980,theInternationalBazaarcelebratedits20thanniversarywithanexperimentaltwo-daybazaar.OnSaturday,November29th,thebazaaropenedfrom2:00to6:30pm,followedbyabuffetforcurrentandformermember ,arrangedbytheI aacfamily-for700people!OnSunday,Stand re-openedforbu ine from9:00amto5:30pm.Theexperimentwa a ucce andthetwo-daybazaarwa adopted.Proceed grew,a didthenumberofcharitie .By1989,over80charitie would harearound11millionLuf.2
Bythemid-1990's,growthhadslowed.ThenumberofStand ,whichhadremainedataround37throughoutthe1980' ,increa edbrieflyintheearly1990' andthenlevelledoffagainat46.Thebu ine ofrunningtheorganizationcontinuedunabated:theSteeringCommitteehadgrowntonearly100member ;thenumberofcharitie nominatedfor upportro eeachyear,increa ingtheworkinvolvedinevaluatingandpre entingproject tomember forapproval.Butmanyvolunteer hadbynowbeenworkingfortheInternationalBazaarfordecade andwerebeginningtothinkofretirement.Feweryoungpeople eemedtohavetimetovolunteer,a thenewmobilityoftheEUlabourforcewa makingitea ierforthemtoworkinLuxembourg.Hadtheorganizationreachedaplateau-orawater hed?ThepresidencyofPiaShapiroin2002re-energizedtheInternationalBazaar.Inaninterviewin2002,newlyelectedPresidentPiaShapiroreaffirmedtheprinciple thathadlongguidedtheInternationalBazaar,and aidthattherewere'...noplan toexpandthebazaar-theeventha ju taboutreachedcapacity...'Buta urpri ewa in tore!Withthreedecade ofexperiencea avolunteer,HeadofStand,SecretaryandVicePre ident,PiaShapirowa uniquelyqualifiedandapopularchoicetoa umeleader hipoftheInternationalBazaarwhenHuguetteRi chard teppeddown.Herpre idency(2002-2009)revitalizedtheorganizationandpropelleditintoanewera.TheInternationalBazaargrewtonearly60Stand duringthepre idencyofPiaShapiro,whowelcomedawidevarietyofnewgroup andnationalitie .Theyoungface ofit manynewvolunteer reflectagenerational hiftthatbeganunderherleader hip.Nolongerprimarilycompri edofWe ternEuropeanandNorthAmericanStand ,themodernbazaarinclude Stand fromA ia,SouthAmerica,Africa,theMiddleEa tand,mo trecently,manynew tand fromEa ternEurope.Thattoday' largeIBL'family'remain oclo e-knitowe muchtotheopportunitie PiaShapiroprovidedforStandHead togettoknoweachotheratinformalreception inherlovelygardenandattheceremonyofRemisedeschèques.De piteourdiver ity,ourcooperative piritremain vital.Alongwithanewgenerationofleader andvolunteer ,the21 tcenturyIBLha embracedthetechnologyofanewera.A Secretary,PiaShapirohadu edamimeographmachine;a Pre ident, helaunchedthefir tInternationalBazaarweb ite!Ourcurrentpresident,Marie-HélèneEhrke-Harf,waselectedin2009.ThefirstLuxembourgnationaltoserveasPresidentoftheInternationalBazaar,shebringsconsiderableknowledgeofInternationalaffairs,aswellasfluencyinfourlanguages,tothejob-havingspentmostofherworkinglifeabroad(USA,France,UK,Germany).With60Stand , till taffedentirelybyvolunteer -theInternationalBazaarha grownmorechallengingtoadmini ter,andha facedri ingco t ,overtheyear inceit inception.Marie-HélèneEhrke-Harfi dedicatedtocontinuingtherejuvenationandmodernizationoftheInternationalBazaar,andha alreadybeguntheworkofparingexpen e andincrea ingefficiency.A partofthi effort, heha over eenthedevelopmentofabeautifulnewweb ite(www.bazar-international.lu)andtheintroductionofemailcommunicationbetweenit manymember .Marie-HélèneEhrke-Harfi al oredefiningtherelation hipoftheIBLwithit parentcommunity,gainingexcitingnew upportfromtheVilledeLuxembourgandenli ting ub tantial pon or hipfromLuxembourg' bankingandbu ine community.There ulti agrowingawarene andrecognitionoftheInternationalBazaar,notonlya acharitableorganization,buta amulti-culturalphenomenonuniquetoLuxembourg.Ofallthere pon ibilitie andchallenge po edbythe21 tcenturyInternationalBazaar-none, hebelieve ,aremoreimportantthantho epo edbytheevaluationofthenumerou andwell-documentedproject nominatedforIBL upporteach pring.Modernimprovement incommunication technologyareenabling mallcharitie inremotelocation to eekhelponanunprecedented cale-andprovidingbothbetteropportunitie andgreaterre pon ibilitie forevaluatingthe ucce oftheproject we upport.Thecharities.InFebruary1967,withpreparation underwayforthee tabli hmentoftheInternationalBazaara anindependentasbl,PamVanderE chcirculatedali tofpotentiallocalandinternationalcharitie toallmember oftheSteeringCommittee- olicitingtheirchoiceofrecipient fortheproceed ofthecomingbazaar.Thi practicewa formalizedinthe1969RéglementinterneduBazarInternationalandcontinue today.3
