TYPES OF LICENSES REQUIRED BED AND BREAKFAST LICENSE is required if one or more rooms are let and full or continental breakfast are served. LODGING PLACE LICENSE is required if four or more rooms are let and no meals are served. EATING AND LODGING LICENSE is required if one or more rooms are let and meals other than a full or continental breakfast are served. PRIVATE WATER SUPPLY TESTING REQUIREMENT

LICENSING FOR THE FIRST TIME: you will need to have your water initially tested for coliform bacteria, nitrate, nitrite, chloride, hardness, copper, iron, pH and manganese. (Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory Test B $42 or equivalent). RENEWING A LICENSE: you will need to have your water tested annually for coliform bacteria, nitrate, and nitrites. (Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory Test A $22 or equivalent). PRIVATE WASTEWATER DISPOSAL SYSTEM REQUIREMENT FOR LICENSING

An applicant with more than 2 bedrooms needs to provide the Department with one

of the following: 1. A subsurface wastewater disposal application (HHE-200), permit and certificate of approval indicating a subsurface wastewater disposal system was designed for the number of existing bedrooms and that it was installed and inspected, or 2. A subsurface wastewater disposal application (HHE-200) and any necessary approvals indicating that in the event of a malfunction of the existing system, the disposal system can be replaced with an enlarged system sized to serve the intended use. You must also record a copy of this documentation in the appropriate registry of deeds and send copies by certified mail, return receipt requested, to all owners of abutting lots. This ensures that abutters and subsequent owners of your property will not install a well or do anything else that may prevent the installation of the replacement system in the event of the original system failure. COMPLIANCE WITH RULES RELATING TO EATING AND LODGING PLACES

A bed and breakfast shall be in substantial compliance with these rules for eating places. However, in keeping with the concept of bed and breakfast, the Department may allow certain deviations from these rules related to equipment provided the public health is not jeopardized. Facilities must be provided for washing and sanitizing of dishes and utensils as well as for adequate refrigeration of foods. A dishwasher is recommended.
