Friday, Sept. 11

th Travel to Errol, NH and to Second College Grant, NH. Arrive by late afternoon (Controlled access gate). Very late afternoon/early evening barbeque and pot-luck dinner at Second College Grant. (NOTE: Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served. We ask for pot-luck dishes and/or dessert items from field trip attendees.)

Evening program and presentation:

Paul Carey, Refuge Mgr. of Lake Umbagog NWR (US Fish and Wildlife Service) will give an evening presentation and talk on the Refuge and its current and future plans for the refuge, including refuge expansion (pending). Future refuge resources mgt. is anticipated to be part of the evening program. Overnight stay at Dartmouth College cabin. (Those who wish to reserve a space in the cabin must do so when registering for the field trip; limited to 25 people, NO charge per Woodlands Mgr.). Tent campsites may be available on limited basis. In addition, a motel is available in Errol and B & B are also available in the area for those not staying at the cabin.

Saturday, Sept. 12

Meet at ~ 8:15 AM at Second College Grant for field trip preparation. Do brief introductions and misc.

~ 8:30 AM, do quick overview and discuss history of the college grant, the college's landholdings, and other area history. Walking and/or driving tour to see the college's forest on Second College Grant, Coos County, NH. Look at recent and less recent harvests and discuss them and silvicultural treatment goals. IF applicable, see on-going timber harvesting operations, if in operational status. See and discuss budworm history and after-effects, and see moose browsing activities. See balsam fir stands and stand dynamics treatments (using uneven-aged management/all-aged mgt. principles) through even-aged techniques, ie, group selections and small patch cuts. See spruce management stand dynamics in action and treatments using same as above practices. See riparian buffer zones and buffer mgt. (as applicable) Trout management Ecosystem mgt./ trout fisheries habitat management + protection and other Natural areas program(s). Possibly see alder habitat management for wood cock. NOTE : Field trip tour is rain or shine. Tour stops and timeline is subject to potential change or amendments. Please bring hiking boots and be ready for adverse weather.
