3 credits30.0 hQ1Teacher(s)Masuy Françoise coordinator ;Language :FrenchPlace of the courseLouvain-la-NeuveMain themesIn speaking

Informal discussion on cultural, political, economic and social topics; debates, recording a sketch with one or two

partners, presenting a grammar point, short improvisations and fun activities in pairs.

In writing

Various creative texts, informative texts, letters, reports of events.

Each activity entails:

•Vocabulary development •Improvement in pronunciation and spelling

•In-depth learning of certain grammar points (using tenses, position of pronouns, choice of relative pronouns etc.)

Aims 1 By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

In speaking

•take part (with clear and natural pronunciation and intonation) in informal discussions with a degree of

spontaneity and ease making it possible to have a normal interaction with a native speaker;

•express an opinion on a social or current affairs issue; present and back up personal opinions;

•develop an argument on various topics (emphasizing important points, linking points logically,

expanding and confirming opinions by secondary arguments and relevant examples.

In writing

•write extensive descriptions of events and real or imaginary experiences;

•write a formal letter expressing his or her point of view on a subject directly related to personal areas

of interest, •write a text 'in the style of' (imitating a style). Writing and speaking show a good command of grammar : slight errors of grammar or syntax may still occur but can be corrected by the learner him/herself.

The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s)

can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled "Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit".

Evaluation methodsDuring the semester

Written texts and oral presentations (sketch and grammar) count for 40% of the final grade.

The exam

1.Part one (oral) : presentation of a general topic which the student is particularly interested in. The topic has to

be carefully prepared according to the method given in the introduction to the course notes.

2.Part two (written) : writing a text on the reading of a novel in French (to be selected from a list). Use of a

monolingual dictionary is permitted.

Teaching methodsThe method is entirely active and demands real involvement and regular participation on the part of the student.

By means of role plays and techniques from the world of theatre, students are led to acquire more confidence and

to engage with th e class group.

Each student takes responsibility for his/her own progress and that of the other members of the group. The method

also requires regular work outside class hours.

ContentIn this course, the students speak and write clearly and in detail on a wide range of subjects, particularly on social

issues.

They have to participate actively in each lesson, presenting and justifying opinions, presenting arguments for and

against various propositions. The aim of most of the interaction is to develop the ability to argue convincingly
