Jack Who?

Halloween has a very interesting story. Halloween dates back to the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts lived in Ireland, United Kingdom, and Northern France 2000 years ago. They celebrated the new year on November 1. On October 31, the Celts celebrated Samhain, which they believed was when the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes of animal's heads and their skins. By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the Celtic's land. During the 400 years the Romans

had two festivals. By the 800's, the influence of Christianity had spread to the Celtic lands. The pope

decided to change November 1st to All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints. The night before it became

All-Hallows Eve and then eventually became Halloween. As Europeans came to America, they brought their varied Halloween customs with them. Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to

house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today's "trick-or-treat" tradition.

The immigrants brought their customs to America. The Irish helped add the tradition into America. One tradition was the jack o'lantern. The story was that a man named Stingy Jack liked to

play tricks on everyone: family, friends and even his mom. Ond day Stingy Jack met the devil himself

and decided to play a trick on him. This trick and his actions resulted in Jack roaming the earth without

a resting place! As legend goes, the people knew about Stingy Jack and were afraid of meeting him in

the night. They carved turnips, rutabagas, gourds, potatoes, and beets. They placed a light in them to

ward off the evil spirits and to keep Jack away. These were the original jack-o-laterns. Later, the immigrants came to America. The immigrants quickly discovered that

pumpkins were bigger and easier to carve out. So, they began to use pumpkins as their jack-o-laterns!

Still Out There?

Once there was a kid named Joey. It was Halloween and Joey was going trick or treating. It was 5:30 and trick or treating was just about to start. Joey was going with his friends, Jake and Chris. Jake was going as a hotdog, Chris was going as Godzilla, and Joey was going as a ninja. "When can I go, Mom?" asked Joey. "I told you Joey! When your little brother's ready!" said Joey's mom. " Why do we have to bring Timmy?" asked Joey. "Ugh. Be quiet Joey." Said Joey's mom. Joey's little brother, Timmy, was going as Barney, the dinosaur. "They're here!" yelled Joey as

Chris's mom pulled into the driveway.

"Bie Joey, have fun!" yelled Joey's mom out the window. After hours of trick or treating, the boys headed back to Joey's house. On the way to their house, Timmy picked up a taco he had found on the ground. When no one was looking, Timmy took a bite. Timmy started to get bigger and turn purple. "What the heck?!" yelled Joey. All of a sudden, Timmy started singing the Barney theme song. "He turned into Barney!" yelled Chris. Then Chris took a bite because he was hungry. "AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!" yelled Chris," I'm turning into Godzilla!" Jake took a bite and turned into a hotdog. Chris picked him up and ate him. Joey took a bite and turned into a ninja. Joey was thinking what to do when his brother walked up and started singing. Joey got mad and kicked him in the stomach. Timmy threw up the taco. He turned normal! Joey knew what to do. He punched Godzilla in the stomach, but he didn't throw up the taco, he threw up the hotdog. By now, Timmy had turned normal because he had spit up the taco. Joey accidentally stepped on the hotdog and it somehow threw up the taco. Godzilla saw this and ran. Everyone was fine and back to normal, except Godzilla. He's still out there.
