Newborn Hearing Screening:
Instructions for Diagnostic Evaluation in AudiologyYour child has been referred for a diagnostic evaluation in Audiology at The Montreal Children's Hospital (MCH)
of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The test that will be done is called Auditory Brainstem
Responses (ABR). This is a more comprehensive evaluation that will allow us to determine exactly how much your
baby can hear. Within three (3) working days, you will be contacted by the Audiology Department at The Montreal Children's Hospital to set up your appointment and answer any questions you may have.ABR appointment:

Description of the test:
The ABR is an objective measurement. The response is obtained by placing four sensors (small metallic discs) that are held on the head and earlobes with cream. Earphones are then placed on the ears and a computer records the brain's reactions to certain sounds. Your child does not have to respond to any sound, in fact he should be asleep during the evaluation. The test will take approximately 1 hour. The ABR cannot be done until your baby is 8 weeks of age and therefore we will schedule your appointment accordingly.Preparation:
Please arrive in Audiology with a tired baby who is not asleep. Keep your baby awake until the audiologist
has placed the electrodes. You will then be given time to feed and calm your baby. The test will begin when
your baby is sleeping.Some helpful suggestions:
Breastfeed your baby or give him/her a bottle of milk before the test or after sensors are placed.Ensure you have the things you may need to make your baby comfortable and happy (i.e. pacifier, favorite

Instructions : Évaluation diagnostique en audiologieVotre enfant est dirigé au service d'audiologie de l'Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants (HME) pour une évaluation
diagnostique de son audition. Le test qui sera effectué se nomme " potentiels évoqués auditifs du tronc cérébral
» (PÉATC). Cette évaluation est plus approfondie et nous permettra de déterminer la sensibilité auditive de votre
bébé de façon plus précise.D'ici les trois (3) prochains jours ouvrables, le département d'audiologie de l'HME vous contactera afi n de vous
donner un rendez-vous et répondre à vos questions.Évaluation diagnostique :

Description du test :
Le PÉATC est un test objectif. La réponse est obtenue en apposant à l'aide de crème quatre petites électrodes (petits disques métalliques) sur la tête et les lobes d'oreille de votre enfant. Des écouteurs sont ensuite insérés dans les oreilles de votre bébé et un ordinateur enregistre les réponses du cerveau aux stimulations sonores. Votre enfant n'a pas à répondre aux sons, en fait, il est nécessaire qu'il dorme pendant l'évaluation. Le test dure approximativement 1 heure. Il est effectué seulement lorsque votre enfant a minimalement 8 semaines et nous planifierons le rendez-vous en fonction de ceci.Préparation :
La journée du rendez-vous en audiologie, arrivez au département avec un bébé fatigué, mais qui n'est pas
encore endormi. Gardez votre bébé éveillé jusqu'à ce que l'audiologiste ait terminé de placer les électrodes et les
écouteurs. Une fois votre bébé préparé pour le test, nous vous offrirons du temps pour le nourrir et le calmer. Le
test débutera uniquement lorsque votre bébé sera endormi. Quelques suggestions utiles :Allaitez ou donnez la bouteille à votre bébé avant le test ou après que le montage d'électrodes-écouteurs
soit complété.Assurez-vous d'avoir sous la main tout ce qui peut apaiser votre bébé (ex. suce, couverture favorite,
bouteille supplémentaire, ...).
