Introduction

At present, people all over the world realize that English has become an international language for spreading information and knowledge. The needs of learning English has made the government from all

non-English speaking country aware that their society need to learn English if they want to develop and

compete in these globalization era. In Indonesia, the importance of learning English has made the

government to stipulate it into a policy, that state; English is a compulsory lesson to be taught in the level

of primary school, junior high school, high school and university.

At university level, English is a cumpulsory lesson to be taught in all faculties. English is taught to

equip the students with English language skill that will help students in the learning process and also for

future needs when they have finish their study at university level. Therefore, a suitability of the material

being taught with the needs of the students is very essential.

However it cannot be denied that teaching English as a foreign language is a difficult and

challenging job to do since the ability in receiving the English language itself may differ among learners.

A teacher is required to be creative and innovative in designing the syllabus and activity to be taught in

class. Teachers may teach English using games, quizzes, learning software, digital technologies and etc.

One of the ways in teaching English is by using a translation machine such as Google Translate. Google

Translate is a translation machine service provided by Google Inc. Recently, many students uses Google

Translate to assist them in doing their task and also to search for the meaning of a certain word from their

native language to other foreign language and vice versa. Eventhough Google Translate claim to be user

friendly and give benefits for people who uses it, still it can also give some disadvantages because it make

students avoiding the learning process itself. Based on the aforementioned explanation, this study aims to address two objectives, they are:

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages in using Google Translate for Indonesian EFL

learners?

2. What English proficiency skill can be developed by using Google Translate?

Literature Review

1. Digital technologies and language learning

It cannot be denied that with the development of digital technologies in language learning it

helps teachers to easily deliver their material in class so the students can learn the lesson in an easy

and fun way. Teachers can create a variety of learning media so that students can learn English in an

easy and fun way, so eventually they no longer assume that English lessons is a difficult and

frightening subject. Digital technologies give many benefits for language learning for both the

teacher and the student. For the teacher, digital technologies can help them to find material resources

for teaching and an alternative solution for problem solving in class related to language learning,

meanwhile for student it can help them to find answers and hints for their task quicker than doing it

in a conventional way by using books and it also much more cheaper because there are many online resources that they can access freely rather than buying books. For example in language learning, students tend to prefer using online dictionary rather than conventional dictionary because these

online dictionary have a quick search engine, so student can search for meaning and example

quicker. This is in accordance with the statement from Mottaram (2013), that states digital

technologies are ideally placed to help teachers working with learners, and learners working

that makes their language development possible.

2. Google Translate

Google Translate is a free translation machine service provided by Google Inc. It was first introduced in 2007 involving more than 50 languages all over the world. In addition, there is also phonetic language or how to read a particular writing style such as Japanese or Chinese. Furthermore google translate increase the number of language and phonetics from year to year since it was first launched. In September 2010, the phonetic added was for Latin, Arabic, Russian, Greek, Persian, and Urdu. Google Translate can translate from your native language into any language like English, Japanese, French, Arabian, Chinese and etc. However, Google Translate does not translate based on grammar or phrasal level but it takes the entire sentences and model sentences output. In other words, the result could be understood easily but it does not sound natural. According to Sundar

Pichai,

Translate is now moving onto a new modal that provides better result. He also stated that Google is

developing the translation method along with other products using artificial intelligence (AI)

technology. To be able to use this free translation machine you can directly search in google.com by typing the keyword: google translate. Then, you will be directed to translate.google.com and you can choose which language to use, from any source language to any target language. Do not forget to

write the word or phrase to be translated in the text box, and then just click on Translate. After that,

you can get the translation as you wish.

Research Method

This study used both the quantitative and qualitative method in describing the findings.

Quantitative method is conducted by calculating the information obtained from the questionnaire. Then

the data is tabulated to describe the difference of information from the respondents.

1. Participant

The participants of this study were forty-one (41) Indonesian students who were selected randomly. All of the students were from the Bachelor Program, specifically, English Department, Faculty of Arts, Udayana University. These students are currently in the second semester and from two different classes namely class A and class B. The respondents consist of thirty (30) female and eleven (11) male students.

2. Instrument

The data for this study was collected by distributing a set of questionnaire to all respondents so it provide different points of view which enable the researchers to look at things from a variety of perspectives for more comprehensive understanding on the matters investigated (Wiersma and Jurs,

2009). The questionnaire was divided into four sections: (a) personal information of respondents; (b)

identification of the advantages of Google Translate; (c) identification of the disadvantages of

Google Translate; and (d) identification of the development of English proficiency after using

Google Translate.

3. Procedure

The procedure ware preformed in the following steps:

1. The lecturers show the students how to used Google Translate,

2. The lectures give task to the student and solve the task using Google Translate,

3. The lecturers worked with each student in turn to know their ability in using Google

Translate.

2. Advantages of using Google Translate in learning English

From the result of the questionnaire, the participants have different perception regarding the advantages of using Google Translate, they are as follows:

1. It is free and quick. Participants thinks that by using Google Translate they can search the

meaning of a certain word quicker, so it will save their time in doing their task rather then they have to open a traditional dictionary.

2. Help them to translate words and provide them with the variation of translation for that specific

word.

3. Help the students to know the synonym of a word either in the source language or the target

language.

4. Students are able to know the word class of a specific word either for the source language or the

target language.

5. Students know how to pronoun words either in the source language or the target language

correctly because google translate has an audio button, so when the student click that button, a recorded voice of native speaker will pronoun the word and also it can read out the whole sentences.

6. Students found that Google Translate is good for phrasal learning because google translate

provide them with option of phrases that contain a certain word that they are dealing with.

3. Disadvantages of using Google Translate in learning English

From the questionnaire, the student also found that Google Translate do not help them and give disadvantages for them with the following reason:

1. Students found that Google Translate tend to do the translation word per word, so when they

write down a complex sentence, the result of the translation does not sound natural. This happen because Google Translate normally used the most common word used by people and sometimes that common word does not fit the meaning of the source language word and it leads to mistranslation or lost in translation.

2. Student found that Google Translate contain significant grammatical error because Google

Translate uses the method based on language pair frequency rather than the grammatical rules.

4. English proficiency development after using Google Translate

Based on the answer of the students, there is some English proficiency that they can improve after using Google Translate as follows:

1. Students stated that after using Google Translate they improved the vocabulary list either in the

native language or target language because google translate provide the its search engine with the meaning, synonym and the variation of translation for certain word.

2. After using Google Translate, student found that their grammar ability has improved in terms of

knowing the right word class of a certain word and also good for their phrasal learning because they can know and learn phrases that they have not been taught yet.

3. Improvement in speaking skill especially pronunciation because after clicking the audio button

in which a recorded native speaker voice will pronoun the word, the student will repeat the pronunciation of that particular word.

Conclusion

From the above discussion, it can be concluded that there are advantages and disadvantages for

student in using google translate for language learning. The advantages are (1) it is free and time efficient,

(2) its provide variation of translation, (3) know the synonym of a word, (4) know the word class of a

word, (5) know how to pronoun word and (6) good for phrasal learning. There are also some

disadvantages stated by the student as follows (1) lost in translation, (2) the result of translation does not

sound natural, (3) loaded with grammatical error. And lastly, the findings show that by using Google Translate a learner can develop their vocabulary, speaking skill, and also their grammar.
