02www.jewishcharlotte.org2019 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

Traditionally, the purpose of an Annual Report is to re?ect, and kvell a little, on successes and accomplishments from the past year, while providing organizational accountability through sound nancial reporting. Which is why producing this year's Annual Report feels...uncomfortable. As we write this letter, the world around us is experiencing extraordinary distress, illness, and havoc wreaked by a global virus, COVID-19. Businesses have come to a standstill, society is in hibernation, people are hungry, scared, and anxious. In light of all this, how can we expect to “celebrate" triumphs achieved so many months ago? And in doing so, won't we seem insultingly tone deaf? But, as we know, time stops for no one, not even a global pandemic, and we felt compelled to report to you on the important work of the Federation and the impact of our donors' generosity. And so, despite our heavy hearts, we dutifully began assembling this 2019 Annual Report. Much to our surprise, in doing so, something crystalized. The connection between last year and this one became glaringly clear: it is only because of our work in 2019 that Federation was able to spring into action during the crisis of 2020. The fundraising and operational infrastructure proudly displayed in this 2019 Annual Report is the exact same fundraising and operational infrastructure hard at work for our community in crisis right now. In the aftermath of 9/11, John Ruskay, the then CEO of the New York City Federation, famously said, “We were eective on 9/11 because of the capacity of our network on 9/10." The same holds true today: the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte was positioned to respond quickly to meet the pressing and urgent needs of COVID-19 because of the strength and eectiveness of our network pre-COVID. During good times and bad, in periods of celebration and sobriety,

Federation Never Closes

Thanks to the generosity and trust of thousands of donors, Federation was here for you yesterday, we are here for you today, and we will be here for you tomorrow - ready to weather and respond to whatever tomorrow may bring. It is with tremendous gratitude and humility that we share with you Federation's 2019 successes and accomplishments. And we look forward with optimism and faith to all that 2020 still holds in store.

With great appreciation,

The PJ Library program continues to grow and connect families to the Jewish community. This year our community grew from one book per household to one book per child, allowing each child in our community to receive their own PJ book each month! Our subscriptions grew from 560 in 2018 to 720 in 2019. The JCRC department continues its advocacy and collaborative activities to ensure the needs and

concerns of the Jewish community are recognized locally, nationally, and internationally. These objectives

are achieved by hosting public events on Israel, anti-semitism, and BDS as well as addressing anti-semitism in public and private elementary, middle, and high schools and colleges in the region.

Inspired and guided by our tradition of

tzedakah (righteousness/charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the

world), the Jewish Federation"s Women"s Philanthropy is dedicated to the continuity, connectivity and

thriving future of our Charlotte Jewish community, Israel and the Jewish people. With an emphasis on donor appreciation, education and impact, Women"s Philanthropy programming creates opportunities for women of all ages and backgrounds to come together to learn, share, and support the community. The Federation"s Annual Campaign raises millions of dollars each year to fund dozens of agencies and programs locally and across the globe, all working to insure a strong foundation for Jewish life and identity-building in greater Charlotte and around the world. A diverse team of local volunteers

participates in a vigorous allocations process to determine how best to distribute precious community

resources and serve as strong stewards of our donors" dollars. The Center for Jewish Education (CJE) enhances community engagement, promotes lifelong Jewish learning, and creates pathways to Jewish identity.

Blumenthal Educators' Resource Center

Provides ongoing support and professional development to our community"s educators: in the fall of

2019 CJE held a Professional Development workshop for over 60 early childhood educators with a

facilitator from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
