Final Project and Presentation

This assignment asks you to apply what you have learned about teaching writing by creating a scaffolded writing assignment (i.e. one that includes the sequence of steps students will engage in) designed to teach a particular piece of literature chosen by your group. It will be: a genre-based assignment based on process pedagogy in which you will: o detail the rationale for your assignment (including writing philosophy) and the role of the writing teacher o outline which genre you have chosen and why o specify how the students (in your chosen grade of middle or high school) will become acquainted with the genre and its requirements o design both whole class and small group work to move your students through various stages of the process o craft the prompt for the final assignment o invent a rubric to evaluate the students' work, including the culminating written assignment and its interim stages Your 25-30 minute presentation to the class must include an explanation of: Why you are you giving this particular writing assignment. That is, why is this is a terrific series of assignments and final prompt? What you especially like about the assignment and why you think it will work well. How it will benefit the students. (Sell us on your plan!) What specific writing fundamentals and skills you will be teaching. Although you may include literary concerns, your focus should be on what writing issues you want your students to practice and learn.
