Vivado installation instructions and Cable drivers

Vivado Installation

We install two packages: Vivado Design Suite and Vivado SDK. Once we download the Vivado tar file (e.g. Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2013.4_1210_1.tar) in the Downloads directory, we execute the following commands to install: % cd ~Download % sudo ./Xilinx_Vivado_SDK_2014.2_0612_1_Lin64.bin We select Vivado System Edition + SDK for installation. We do not install Cable Drivers. At the end of the installation, the following tree of files has been created in the default /opt/Xilinx directory: We invoke Vivado by typing vivado in the Linux shell prompt.

Connecting to Zedboard

In order to communicate with the Zedboard, we need to do a list of things:

1. Connect the power cable to the Zedboard

2. Connect a micro-USB cable between your PC and the Zedboard connector J17 (JTAG). This is

used to transfer the bitstream from the hard disk of the PC to the FPGA. It is also used for Hardware Debugging (Chipscope) and for Software Debugging (GDB)

3. Connect a second micro-USB cable between your PC and the Zedboard connector J14 (UART).

This is the UART serial interface to transfer data to a screen for printfs.

4. Power the Zedboard

5. Install JTAG cable drivers (see below)

6. Set up the terminal emulator (described in the labs)

Cable driver installation

Connecting a Xilinx development board is not always plug and play especially if you are working in a

Linux environment. For some reason, it was always troublesome to make Xilinx boards talk to the outside

world using a USB cable or a Parallel-IV cable. Use the lsusb Linux command to see if the USB ports have been assigned to your boards. Device 005 (USB to UART - Cypress Semiconductor Corp.) and 006 (USB to JTAG Future Technology Devices

Int.) are the two USB ports we are using in this snapshot. Note that the numbers may be different in each

machine and also each time you power up and down Zedboard.

We will now install Digilent cable drivers. Xilinx uses software from Digilent to configure Xilinx logic

devices, initialize scan chains, program FPGAs, CLPDs and PROM. We will go to the Digilent web page

and download all software from there. We will install the following 32 or 64-bit applications (depending

on the Linux version you are using). Let us assume a 32-bit Linux distribution:

Digilent Adept

Adept 2.15.3 Runtime, x32 Linux

Adept 2.1.1 Utilities, x32 Linux

Digilent Plugin for Xilinx Tools

Digilent Plug-in, 32-bit Linux

The following three zipped files are the latest at the moment I wrote this instruction manual:

libCseDigilent_2.5.2-i686.tar.gz

Installing Digilent Cable Drivers

To install the Digilent Adept software we will run the three install scripts and copy the plugins to the

SDK installation directory.

% cd $HOME/Downloads/digilent.adept_runtime_2.15.3-i686 % sudo sh ./install.sh % cd ftdi.drivers_1.0.4-i686 % sudo sh ./install.sh % cd $HOME/Downloads/digilent.adept_utilities_2.1.1-i686 % sudo sh ./install.sh Let the installer put everything in default locations.

Copy Digilent Plugins

We copy the plugins libCseDigilent.so and libCseDigilent.xml from the directory to the directory: Check that the rules file 52-digilent-usb.rules has been installed in the directory /etc/udev/rules.d Before we can use the Digilent cable drivers we have to reboot Linux or run this command to initialize the new udev rules file: % sudo udevadm control --reload-rules Included in the Digilent Adept installation is a command-line program called djtgcfg. We can use this program to test if the JTAG connection to the ZedBoard works. % djtgcfg enum % djtgcfg init ±d Zed

The output of this command should be

If the last command works, we have successfully established connection with the Zedboard!

Petalinux Installation

Note: the Petalinux and Vivado versions should be the same. In this note, we will describe the latest

Petalinux installation (2014.2).

From Xilinx website, download PetaLinux 2014.2 Installation archive for Zynq and MicroBlaze and PetaLinux 2014.2 Board Support Package for Avnet/Digilent ZedBoard. We will install Petalinux in the /opt/PetaLinux directory: cd $HOME/Downloads sudo ./petalinux-v2014.2-final-installer.run /opt/PetaLinux

PetaLinux requires a number of standard development tools and libraries to be installed on your Linux

hostworkstation. The PetaLinux installation process checks for these packages, and reports an error if any

are missing, however it does not attempt to install them - you must do this manually. The following table

describes the required packages, and how to install them on different Linux workstation environments.

To setup the working environment we source the setup script (for C shell): source /opt/PetaLinux/petalinux-v2014.2-final/settings.csh Verify that the $PETALINUX environment has been set correctly to /opt/PetaLinux/petalinux-v2014.2-final/ echo $PETALINUXquotesdbs_dbs14.pdfusesText_20
