MarigoldResults disclosed that African Marigold cultivar PusaNarangiGaindaperformed better in theTerai region of West Bengal as compared to the cultivar PusaBasantiGainda and applicationof plant growth regulators pronounced the effect much further, out of which, application of50 ppm BA at 21 and 42 days after transplanting improved the flower production anddiameter of flowers.Application of FYM (5Kg/m2) +Azotobacter(5g/Kg of FYM) +Phosphate SolubilizingBacteria(5g/ Kg of FYM ) in Afri can Mar igold culti var PusaNarangiGaindashowedsustainable production of organic Marigold in the Terai region of West Bengal.AsgandFor directin vitroregeneration ofWithaniaseedlings, a culture medium containing MS+5.0mg l-1GA3+ 5.0 mg l-1Kinetin wasfound superior in terms of growth and development, whereas, for regeneration from nodal explants, medium having MS+1.0 mg l-1BAP+2.0 mg l-1IAA recorded the maximum response percentage and number of multiple shoots. However, for obtaining maximum rooting percentage, early root initiationand maximum root growth ofplantlets, use of MS medium supplemented with 5.0 mg l-1IBA was found better.GladiolusResults suggested that during dormancy to vegetative stage a rapid change occurred in cormreserve compositions of gladiolus reflected in thechanges in reducing sugar, non-reducingsugar, starch, lipids, ascorbic acid, phenols and enzymes giving an idea of key regulatorymechanism during dormancy to sprouting of corms.GA3@ 50 ppm improved the quality and yield attributing characteristics ofGladiolus, like-leaf phenol content, non-reducing sugar and protein content of corms, spike length andnumber of florets per spike. BA @ 100 ppm and Triacontanol @ 50 ppm showed results inseveral qualitative and quantitative characters of Gladiolus which were very near to the effectof GA3@ 50ppm.Ornamental Annuals

10

Twenty different genotypes of ornamental annuals were evaluated under two differentgrowing environments (open field and polyhouseconditions) and the results revealed thatvariability exists within the genotypes under each growing environment or in the samegenotype under different growing conditions. Variability exists within the genotype as well asin the growing environment in respect of growth characters, earliness and floriferousness, duration of blooming, quality of flowers, chlorophyll, protein and anthocyanin content on thebasis of which the annuals were grouped for different landscaping purposes. The experimentgave a precise database of the comparative performance of 20 different winter annuals inrespect of the duration between the major stages of flowering in both ways from the DAT aswell as from the preceding stage.Dry flower technologyThe standardized dehydration technique reflected that African Marigold needed 18hrs insilica gel under hot air oven and 4 minutes in microwave oven, French Marigold needed12hrs in silica gel under hot air oven and 3 minutes in microwave oven, Star Marigold, Rosesand crotons needed thesame as French Marigold, Mussaenda that needed 6hrs in silica gelunder hot air oven and 2 minutes in microwave oven and Bougainvillea needed 12hrs in silicagel under hot air oven and 2 minutes in microwave oven for complete drying.TuberoseThe study represented that pulsing of tuberose cv. Prajwal with Sucrose (9%)+8-HQ(200ppm) for 24 hours extended the post-harvest longevity of cut spikes as well as improvedthe floret opening. On the other hand holding or vase-solution containing Sucrose (6%)+BA(30ppm) improved the vase-life, changes in fresh weight, floret opening, water uptake andwater balance and hence may be recommended.GladiolusThe study recommended five gladiolus genotypes i.e ACC04, ACC11, ACC13, ACC14, andACC15 for commercial cultivation under Terai region of West Bengal. These lines, havinghigh rate of seed set in open pollination, were also identified as potential parent material forfuture breeding programme. The study also indicated presence of additive, additive epistatic

11

and dominant gene effect governing different vegetative and floral traits of gladiolus. Theinvestigation recommended MS +GA35mg/l + kinetin (0.5mg/l) as best media for gladiolusseed germination and VSM + vermiculite +sand (1: 1) followed by vermiculite + vermi-compost (1:1) for higher seedling survival rate.Azotobacter @2 gm/ plant + PSB @ 2 gm/plant +RDF-75%+ FYM@ 50 tons /ha as basalwere showed better results in early emergence of spike (58.50 days), First floret show colour(62.16 days ) Spike length (118.68cm) and spike girth (13.09) cm of gladiolus. Vase life werefound maximum (11.37 days) with the 10% sucrose +HQ 200ppm in the factor A. In case offactor B Silver Nitrate @ 50ppm gave the better vase life of (10.80days). In the interactioneffect treatment combination 8 %sucrose + HQ 200 ppm + citric acid @2000 ppm gavemaximum vase life of (11.94 days).MarigoldThe study opined that exogenous application of GA3in African Marigold at 250 ppm during21 and 42 days after transplanting showed earliness with increased duration of flowering, induced greater chlorophyll synthesis and produced higher amount of biomass, reducing andnon-reducing sugars, carotenoid content of flower petal, number of flowers per plant withgreater diameter and fresh weight, thereby higher yield and B:C ratio.MicropropagationThe study indicated that MS medium supplemented with 4mg/l 2, 4-D is suitable for callusinduction of Gerbera and Gladiolus but culture media containing MS + 6mg/l 2, 4-D + BAP(0.5 mg/l) showed earliest callus initiation. Better and higher shoot regeneration in Gerberaand Gladiolus was achieved with MS medium supplemented with 4mg/l BAP but earliershoot regeneration was noticed with the culture medium MS + BAP (6mg/l ) + NAA(0.5mg/l) . A potti ng medi um containi ng Garde n soi l, sa nd and vermicompos t was foundbetter for acclimatization of plantlets. The processes of differentiation and organogenesis inboth the species showed high metabolic activity resulting rapid growth and multiplication.Chrysanthemum: Sixteen genotypes of spray type chrysanthemums were evaluated undersix growing conditions. Based on their morphological characterization, genotypes WhiteAnemone, Yellow Baby, BCC-1, Basantiwere suitable for pot culture and ground cover.BCC-22 and BCC-150suitable for pot cultureNanako Yellow, Nanako White, Local Yellow,BidhanAntara, BCC-38, BCC-24, BCC-4 genotypes as cut flower and Local Yellow, White

12

Prolific, BCC-22, BCC-4, BCC-29, BCC-34 genotypes as loose flower chrysanthemums.Genotypes Local Yellow and BCC-4 showed an all-round performance.High productivity offlowers (85-100 flowers per plant) wa s recor ded in genotype s Na nako Whit e, NanakoYellow. BCC-38 and BCC-150 yielded an average of 60-70 flowers per plant, whereas, theflower productivity of BCC-22, BidhanAntara, BCC-4, BCC-34 and Basanti ranged between50-60 flowers per plant. Maximum productivity was recorded when the crop was planted in1stweek of July under polyhouse condition. Early planting in July promoted taller plants withluxurious vegetative growth. September planting encouraged both horizontal and verticalgrowth. Chrysanthemum plants grown under Terai region of West Bengal showed escaperesistance to aphids when planted in July.4.Developmental ProgrammeSl.
