Basic Hindi:
A two semester course of Hindi for Non-native Speakers -native Basic course will cater to the needs of those students who have had very little or no exposure to Hindi in the past.The broad objectives of these courses will be:
1. to help students overcome their inhibition to speak Hindi
2. to help them understand both, the formal and the informal Hindi
3. to equip them with such communicative skills by engaging them in
meaningful conversations4. to introduce them to basic Hindi syntactic structures and vocabulary
5. to enable them to read and understand simple Hindi texts in the beginning
and complex texts by the end of the course6. to help them write simple and better structures in Hindi
AREAS TO BE COVERED
1. Sounds of Hindi and the Devanagri Alphabet
2. Conversational Hindi
3. Listening Comprehension
4. Reading Comprehension
5. Writing Skills
6. Conversational Norms (Politeness)
METHODOLOGY
LEC uses innovative methods of language teaching. Text and context are at center from alphabets to words and sentences and eventually to texts. We instead start with simple, small and interesting texts. It is a holistic approach. The focus is on rich input. Whenever there is suitable opportunity, structural patterns are brought out by the learners and then discussed in collaboration with the tutor. Our target is to breakinhibition and to initiate fluency. During the entire course the focus is on the development of Hindi communicational skills, i.e. from conversational in limited
contexts to conversations in larger social contexts.
