Foundation p. 16

Higher p. 7, p. 30

The present tense is the most commonly used, so carack it and it"s a great start!

There are three types of regular verbs (-

er , -ir and -re verbs), but the most common are -er verbs. To form the present tense of these regular verbs, cross off - er , -ir or -re and add the following endings: -er verbs-ir verbs-re verbs je-e-is-s tu-es-is-s il/elle/on-e-it- nous-ons-issons-ons vous-ez-issez-ez ils/elles-ent-issent-ent

In English we use the continuous present 'I am playing" as well as 'I play", but in French the present tense

covers both these meanaings. jouerto play je jou eI play/am playing tu jou esyou play/are playing il/elle/on jou ehe/she/one plays/ is playing nous jou onswe play/are playing vous jou ezyou play/are playing ils/elles jou entthey play/are playing

Some -

er verbs have spelling changes:

Verbs ending in -ger (e.g. manger, nager) add -e in the nous form to soften the g sound: nous mangeons.

Verbs ending in -ler and -ter (e.g. appeler, jeter) double the l or the t in the je, tu, il/elle/on and ils/elles

forms: j"appelle elle jette.

Verbs ending in -yer (e.g. envoyer, payer) change the y to i in the je, tu, il/elle/on and ils/elles forms:

tu envoies ils paient

Some verbs change e or é to è (e.g. acheter - j"achète, préférer - je préfère). This change only happens in

the je tu il/elle/on and ils/elles forms. finirto finish je fin isI finish/am finishing tu fin isyou finish/are finishing il/elle/on fin ithe/she/one finishes/is finishing nous fin issonswe finish/are finishing vous fin issezyou finish/are finishing ils/elles fin issentthey finish/are finishingvendreto sell je vend sI sell/am selling tu vend syou sell/are selling il/elle/on vendhe/she/one sells/is selling nous vend onswe sell/are selling vous vend ezyou sell/are selling ils vend entthey sell/are selling
