SweetKindergarten

Welcome friends!

This pack includes a sweet little

activity I did as part of my annual evaluation this year. After learning about 2D and 3D shapes, we build them using toothpicks and marshmallows! Each student was given a plate, toothpicks and marshmallows and allowed to let their creativity flow!

This lesson allows students to think

critically and covers several common

included some shape building cards that I used as needed with some of my struggling students who needed more support. The student can look at the shape first, then build it.

Lesson Plan- Math

Mrs. Rosenblit - Kindergarten

Topic: Identifying, describing and building 2D

shapes

Standards: Kindergarten Common Core

Math - Geometry

CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.2 Correctly name

shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size.

CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.5 Model shapes in

the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay balls) and drawing shapes.

Objectives: Students will review the names

of shapes and describe their sides & vertices. Students will be able to build a 2D shape with toothpicks and marshmallows and describe it. Pre-Lesson Activity: Students will activate prior knowledge POURXJO YLHRLQJCVLQJLQJ T7OH 2G 6OMSHV POMP H NQRRe VRQJ

Lesson:

1.Students will review our objective and state why it is

important to know.

2.Students participate in Turn & Talk activity with their

partners to discuss the 2D shapes that they have learned.

3.Students will describe those shapes as we build a 2D shape

anchor chart together

4.Students return to tables to create their 2D shapes.

Students will build a 2D shape using toothpicks and marshmallows Students will write the name of their shape and how many sides & vertices it has.

Students self-assess how they did on their paper.

Post-Lesson/Review: Students will share their shapes with the class, describing their sides and vertices. Evaluation: I will be checking for understanding during oral activities, whole group Anchor Chart creation, and shape building activity. I will be continuously monitoring for student XQGHUVPMQGLQJ POURXJO TGR \RX NQRR LQ \RXU OHMUPe POXPN activity. Additionally, students will self-monitor themselves at the end of the activity.

Challenge:

Build a 3D shape using toothpicks and

marshmallows. Then, tell about your shape!

How many

sides?

How many

vertices?

Draw it!
