The Department works in three main interlinked areas: (i) it compiles, generates and analyses a wide range of economic, social and environmental data and information on which States Members of the United Nations draw to review common problems and to take stock of policy options; (ii) it facilitates the negotiations of Member States in many intergovernmental bodies on joint courses of action to address ongoing or emerging global challenges; and (iii) it advises interested Governments on the ways and means of translating policy frameworks developed in United Nations conferences and summits into programmes at the country level and, through technical assistance, helps build national capacities. Introduction
The objective of this publication is to present current monthly economic and social statistics for most of the countries and territories of the world. In addition, each month a selection of tables shows annual and/or quarterly data on subjects illustrating important socio-economic trends and developments. All data published in this edition are available in electronic format in the online version of the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics (MBS Online, see http://unstats.un.org/unsd/mbs/). The MBS
Online typically presents longe
r time series than the print version. Additionally, the following statistical series are included in the online version: Gross domestic product, volume measures; Retail trade indices; and World food situation, FAO food price index.
Sources
The statistics appearing in the Bulletin are obtained by the
Statistics Division of the United
Nations and the international
statistical services from official sources in the countries. International sources for the Bulletin include the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, International Civil Aviation Organization, International Civil Service Commission, International Labour Office and the International
Monetary Fund.

Comparability of the data
Data definitions are provided for the statistical terms in the tables. These present the internationally recommended statistical terms and definitions in current use. Where individual series differ fundamentally from th e descriptions in the note, the differences are indicated in footnotes. Where a significant break in the homogeneity of a particular national series occurs, the point at which the break occurs is indicated by the symbol "#"; the nature of the change is generally described in a footnote.
Revisions and changes in tables
Each issue contains all the revisions made in the figures up to the date of publication of the Bulletin. In general, figures for the latest months are to be regarded as provisional. Table 4 has been suspended pending implementation of ISIC Rev.4. Table 31 was re-introduced in July 2013 and includes countries or areas whose airlines performed more than 100 million total tonne-kilometres or more than 25 million freight tonne-kilometres in 2012. The coverage in table 48 was modified in June 2013 to include discount rates only, i.e. the interest rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks to meet their liquidity needs.
Time period
As far as possible, the figures are given for the
calendar years 2005-2014 inclusive and for the most recent
18 months. In general, the annual figures are expressed as
monthly averages; exceptions (e.g. most of the tables under the International Merchandise Trade and Finance Sections) are indicated. For the registration of new motor vehicles, annual totals are shown.
Units of measurement
Metric units are used in all tables in which the data are measured in weight, volume, length or area.
Rounding of figures
When necessary, figures are rounded off to the nearest final digit. For this reason, there may be an apparent slight discrepancy between the sum of the constituent items and the total as shown in some series.
