2016-17 Gustavus Adolphus Men's Hockey Game Notes

GUSTAVUS EMBARKS ON 75TH SEASON OF MEN'S HOCKEY

One of the most storied programs in collegiate men's hockey, Gustavus Adolphus College embarked on its 75th season with an all-time record of 863-641-81 and a mark of 573-436-50 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, including 14 league championships. The Gusties have earned a place in the NCAA Division III Tournament six times, which includes a runner-up ?nish in 2009. Gustavus ?rst recognized a men's hockey team in 1937 when then Director of Physical Education George Myrum became interested in the sport and raised the funds to sponsor a team. The Gusties fell to Carleton in their ?rst ever intercollegiate game in 1936 and it would take until 1939, the ?rst year Gustavus played on natural ice in the on-campus ?eldhouse, for Gustavus to record the ?rst victory in the program's history. Gustavus went without a hockey team for a few years during World War II and was unable to attract enough players in 1951 and 1963, resulting in lost seasons. But in 1964, Athletics Director Lloyd Hollingsworth asked Don Roberts to restart the program and he accepted even though he had never played or coached hockey prior to taking over the reins of the edgling Gustavus program. In Roberts' ?rst season at the helm of the hockey program, the Golden Gusties skated to a record of 1-14 before quickly becoming a dominant force in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), securing 12 of the next 13 league titles. Roberts' teams also had success on the national stage, where they ?nished in the top four at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championships for 10 consecutive years (1968-77). Gustavus ?nished second at the NAIA championships three times—1972,

1975, and 1977.

After Gustavus joined the NCAA in 1980, Roberts' Gusties would go on to play in the NCAA national tournament seven times, including an appearance in the Frozen Four in 1982 (where they ?nished third). Roberts coached the Golden Gusties to an overall record of 532-290-25 in 33 seasons (1964-97) and his teams claimed 13 league titles. His 532 wins currently rank 20th all-time across all divisions of college hockey and sixth in Division III. Under the tutelage of 19 head coaches, the Gusties are nearing the program's 900th win with a winning percentage of .571. Gustavus boasts

46 All-Americans in its 75-season history, including one AHCA Player of

the Year in David Martinson (2010).

GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF

Brett Petersen enters his 17th season as the head coach of the Gustavus Adolphus men's hockey team for the 2016-17 season. In his 16-year tenure behind the Gustavus bench, Petersen has compiled a 212-171-45 overall record. His 212 wins at Gustavus rank second behind legendary coach Don Roberts. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place ?nish in the conference, and again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their ?rst MIAC title since

1993. While at Gustavus, Petersen has worked with 18 All-Conference

players, three MIAC Player of the Year recipients, eight AHCA All- Americans and one National Player of the Year (David Martinson, 2010). Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992quotesdbs_dbs12.pdfusesText_18
