5th Sonata for piano
Opus 105 - Estimated length: 8'40
COMMISSIONED BY THE 26TH EPINAL INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION, 2017PRESENTATION
Like the frst four Sonatas composed between
1984 and 1987, t his5th Sonata, writ ten in
2016, forms a single m ovement that lasts
approximately 8 minutes 40.The Sonata is Scriabinesque in style: a blend of
modernity, romanticism and impressi onism, making use of subtle polytonal compositional techniques. It is in traditional sonata form, with two main themes: the 'sturm un d drang'- inspired theme A, and the mo re lyrical, spontaneous theme B.The arsis of theme A is ch aracterised by the
tension of a diminished-octave leap (bar 7) or minor ninth, followed by an anguished thesis (bar 24), wh ich resolves into a jo yful free- fowing peal (bar 43) that heralds a renaissance (bar 56). Them e B is more spontan eous, an enchanting phrase that emerges like dew from the skies (bar 78).These two themes form the basi s of the
exposition, a short development (bar 110), and a re capitulation and coda (bar 201). The exposition, development and recapitulation/coda last respectively 3, 2 and 3 minutes, with the piece lasti ng a total of 8 minutes. The score is w ritten in tradit ional notation.
Pedal markings are p rovided for guidan ce,
particularly to clarify my harmonic logic. They can be adjusted by the performer as required. When performed in a concert setting, I would
suggest that the So nata be preceded - ad libitum - b yUn matin de Sonate (op. 106), a less str uctured piece lasting 3 minutes, taken from thePréludes-impressionsalbum. Th is shortPrélude-impressions offers a brief glimpse of the main thematic elem ents in the alb um and hints at the atmosphere o f a sprin g morning. While the5th Sonata is characterised by a
thematic duality opposin g anguish and joyful liberation, forUn matin de Sonate it is easy to imagine an open window looking out onto a garden at sunrise, a magical tableau of morning mist, birdsong, futtering wings and cool stones, before the pale rays of light give way to the full force of the sun. Deep, invigorating lungfuls of fresh air provi de life-givin g force after the dreams of the previous night. The 5th Sonata has been commissioned by the
Epinal International Piano Competition due
to take place in April 2017. It is dedicated to a poet and musician who was very dear to me, the wonderful pianist Pierre Froment (see note *1), to whom I pay tribute with this piece. This is what inspired me to allude to the Gregorian requiem melody in the harmonic progressions© Composer studio - SDV B60309
(bar 250), much as Debussy quotesLa Marseillaise in his Feux d'artifces.
I also quote my2nd Sonata (bar 158) at a key
point in the recapitu lation, in a gesture of artistic reconciliation with the many years that have passed since I wrote the 4th Sonata.Every morning of his life, through the works of
Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Debussy, Ravel, Bartók and Messiaen, Pi erre Froment teased out the sounds and scents (see note *2 ) concealed within the musical text, demonstr ating an inimitable touch and clothing hi s Pleyel andSteinway pianos in a sh immering palette of
colours. As well as this tribute to Pierre, the Sonata is a tribute to all accomplished musicians who have given l ogic to beau ty, and who have found beauty in the logic of musical texts.Notes:
•(*1) Pierre Froment (1937-2016), pianist, pupil of Al fred Cortot, teacher at the Rennes Conservatoire, France; recordings available at www.forgottenrecords.com •(*2) A quotation from Charles Baudelaire'sLes Fleurs du mal: "Sounds and scents circle in the evening air"Notes for the Epinal Competition:
•In the absence of a recommended recording, I wanted to provide you with an initial studio demo of the5th Sonata to give you an idea of how to read the score - the accidentals, tempi, etc. This recording is intended solely for that purpose; it should allow you free rein when it comes to artistic interpretation and creation. •The Prélude- impressions "Un matin d e Sonate" is not in cluded with t his copy of the 5th Sonata, mainly to avoid any confusion as to whether or not it should be performed at the competition. •I would like to thank pianist and composer Thierry Huillet for kindly agreeing to share his thoughts during the composition of this piece.C.Guyard, April 2016
