Under certaindrive cycles(extended highengine

Note:If vehicleis builtoutside ofthis breakpoint, it should alreadybe equippedwith thisAFM shieldor the pan doesnot havean AFMvalve (LFA beforeJuly

7, 2009).

Tocorrect thiscondition, installan AFMshield, perform the pistoncleaning procedureas describedin this document andinstall anew oilpan gasketper the procedure outlinedin thisdocument. Monitoroil consumption afterthis repairto ensureoil consumption has improvedto acceptablelevels. If thisrepair doesnot correctthe condition,it maybe necessary toreplace allof thepiston assemblies (piston andrings) withnew parts.Refer toSI forrepair procedure. Important:It iscritical inthis cleaningprocess thatthe engine/fuel injectorcleaner remainin thecylinders fora minimum of2.5 hoursto fullyclean thecompone nts.

The cleanersolution mustbe removedbefore a

maximum ofthree hours.

1. Removethe sparkplugs andensure thatnone of

the pistonsare attop deadcenter (TDC).

2. Cleanthe pistonsby putting1 18-147ml (4-5oz) of

Upper Engineand FuelInjector Cleaner, GM

P/N 88861803(in Canada,use 88861804), ineach

cylinder.Allow thematerial tosoak forat least

2.5-3.0 hours,but nomore thanthree hoursand

then removethe cleaner. Asuggestedmethodof removing thecleaner iscranking theengine over.

Make sureto unplugthe ignitioncoils andfuel

injector beforecranking theengine over. Also make surethat thepainted surfacesare covered so nodamage isdone.

3. Removethe oilpan. Referto OilPan Replacement

in SI.

5. Installthe newshield (1),GM P/N12639759, and

tighten theAFM valveto theoil panto 28Y (20lbft).

Important:Ensure thatthe enginecleaner is

thoroughly removedbefore reinstallingthe sparkplugs. Failure todo somay resultin ahydro-lock condition.

6. Reinstallthe sparkplugs. Replacethe sparkplugs

if necessarydue tofull ofcarbon. Referto theparts catalog.7. Reinstallthe oilpan. Referto theOil Pan

Installation procedurein SI.Replace theoil pan

Replace theengine oil.

8. Re-evaluatethe oilconsumption .Document onthe

repair order.Ifthe oilconsumption isstill greater than 0.946L (1qt) in3,200 km(2000 mi), replacement ofthe pistonsand ringswill be required.

Important:Some minorscratches maybe noticedon

the cylinderwalls duringpiston andring replacement. If the scratchcannot befelt whenrunning yourfinger nail over it,the scratchis considerednormal wearand the block orengine shouldnot bereplaced.

Note:It isnot necessaryto honeor deglazethe

cylinder walls.Honing mayinduce unnecessary cylinder walland /or pistonring damageif itis done incorrectly and/ornot cleanedthoroughly .Cylinder walls shouldcleaned thoroughlywith brakecleaner before installationof thenew pistonsand rings.

Numerous enginesreplaced foroil consumptionhave

been inspected. The crosshatch hasbeen consistently good andis inspecification. Asa result,is shouldnot be necessaryto measurethe cylindersif theypass the visual inspection.

Note:After thepiston/ring replacementit willtake

2000-3000 mi.for thenew ringsto seat.Adequate

break timeis necessary priortorecheckingthe oil consumption level.

Note:Do notoverlook thevalve sealsat higher

mileage. Lookin thehead portsfor evidenceof excessive amountsof oilgetting pastthe seals.

Note:It isrecommen dedtoinstallan AFMshield any

doing thepiston cleaningon acast ironblock engine since thecast ironblock engineuses adif ferentoil pump thanan aluminumblock engine, which resultsin a higherengine speedbefore theAFM pressurerelief valve opens(cast ironblock enginesare lessprone to the AFMoil spraycondition describedearlier). Ifyou find itnecessary toreplace thepistons and/orremove the oilpan forany otherreason, onlythen shouldyou add theshield.
