Er begann schon sehr früh, sich für psychologische Literatur zu interessieren und las unter anderem Werke von Freud, Jung und Pawlow. Die Beziehung zu seinen Eltern gestaltete sich zusehends schwieriger: Vor allem te nachhaltig die Beziehung. Zudem litt Maslow unter den Herabwürdigungen durch seinen Vater.
