Sunny Provence in the south
of France has always been a favorite with our travelers. Its history, landscapes and elegant accommodations, plus its superb cuisine and splendid wines, combine to make it an ideal place to visit. For our 2013 Provence Walk we're introducing the successful formula of our recent walking trips: on most days there's a choice of two guided walks. Enjoy a gentle amble through the (ground cover of the lowlands) with moderate altitude gain or opt for a longer, more strenuous hike into the steeper terrain of the area. Either choice offers lots of scenic beauty and healthy exercise. Join us and experience this delightful approach to walking in France. BRETT S. ThOmPSON, '83, DIRECTOR, STANFORD TRAVEL/STUDY

What to
expeCt
We consider this to be a fairly strenuous and
physically demanding program. Our walks are varied in character and range, from city walks in Arles and Avignon to hill trails at St. Rémy and rough mountain paths in Aix and the Lubéron.
Trails may be uneven, rocky or muddy and
involve some uphill and/or downhill grades.
Walks range in length from approximately
three to 12 miles per day. The weather in this region may be warm much of the time, yet wind and rain showers are equally possible. To participate fully in this walking tour, you need to be physically fit, agile and used to moderate exercise. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.
In order for our travelers to fully enjoy this
remarkable region of France, we're offering two options for many of the days of countryside walking. All of our walks are led by experienced leaders. option i is a relatively easy walk of three to six miles over gentle terrain that allows walkers time to enjoy the scenery at a more leisurely pace. option ii is a longer, more strenuous walk, or hike, of between five and 12 miles that allows more adventurous walkers to explore wilder parts of the countryside. These walking trails can be rugged and have altitude gains and/or losses of 1,140 to 2,600 feet. On some days Option II walkers may be asked to carry their own water and picnic lunches.
In some instances, it will not be possible for
walkers on the longer walks to visit or spend as much time at some of the sites on our itinerary as those taking the shorter options.
