About the Author

Ever since my parents brought home a computer in the early 1990's, I have enjoyed writing code and

animating things on the screen. It's one of my few childhood hobbies (besides crying when things don't go

my way and eating ice cream) that I still actively pursue. Let's fast-forward a few years. In 1999, I decided

to create a blog called kirupa.com (creative, right?) where I began to document tips, tricks, and other random

information about how to use your computer to draw/create/animate and do cool things with it. Over the

years, this little blog became one of the most popular places where web developers and designers came to

learn more about Flash and other related technologies such as, most recently, the three musketeers: HTML,

CSS, and JavaScript. In parallel, my offline activities have kept me busy as well. For my sins, I was

sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment at MIT where I majored in Electrical Engineering and

Computer Science. Shortly after graduation, as part of a work-release program, I joined Microsoft as a

Program Manager on a team that is currently known as Visual Studio. When I am not writing or breaking

things, I drink a lot of bubble tea, play video games, attend live music shows, set bonfires, watch movies, and

hang out with friends. I'm pretty much the most awesome person that I know. I am currently working on

being more modest.

Very educational, surprisingly impressed

By Trevor Mccauley

To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. It's self-published through Amazon's independent

publishing services, so you have no idea what kind of quality you're in for. But knowing Kirupa

Chinnathambi as I do, I couldn't wait to read it, and I couldn't have been more surprised by what I got.

The first thing you realize is that this book has character - it has Kirupa written all over it. And this is a good

thing. In the very first page of the book (technically, page 2), in the dedications, the first thing you see is that

his first dedication is to Bubble Tea. And this is annotated with a message saying "My dentist thanks you!"

Throughout the book you're treated with gems like these as Kirupa holds back nothing of himself. Kirupa covers what you'd expect for a book called, "Animation in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript." This

includes animation in HTML using CSS and, you guessed it, JavaScript. Multiple approaches for each are

described in surprising detail in an easy-to-follow language, and practical examples (you'll probably actually

want to use) are also included for a better idea of how these are put to practice. Reading the book felt like a

friend taking time out of his busy day (he must be busy if he knows so much about this stuff), sitting down

next to you, and explaining exactly how things work and how you should be using them.

There are also tons of vibrant and colorful illustrations that really help with comprehension. I will definitely

recommend the color version over black and white if you're going with the print. It really doesn't feel the

same in black and white.

Criticisms: My first problem with the book (printed) was that pressing my finger on a link didn't open it. This

was annoying. Thankfully Kirupa used bit.ly for many (but not all) of the links used in the book making it a

little easier to get to that linked information. Secondly, though this book covers about everything you need to

know about animating in HTML, it doesn't work very well as a reference. There is no index in the back, and

the verbosity of the content doesn't always make it easy to find a specific property or definition. That being

said, the internet works much better at having a reference for these things, and you don't need this book if

that's all you want. Lastly, and this is pretty minor: I wished there was more space in the margins. I tend to

put notes in the margins of printed books like these, and with the printed version I received, there wasn't

always a whole lot of space for this. In the end, I was definitely impressed with Animation in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Kirupa, with his

innate ability to educate, did a splendid job on bringing this book together. I would definitely recommend it

for anyone jumping into animation in HTML.

The future of educational programming books?

By Shane Waldeck

The first thing you will notice when you open this book is that it oozes with personality. It is one of the best

things about this book. It takes the typical format of educational programming books away from droning on

about code in an almost monotonous tone to making you feel like someone is right there next to you

explaining things in an understandable and whimsical fashion complete with witty remarks. It teaches you by

showing you large chunks of code as a whole, and then breaking it down almost line by line (occasionally

breaking it down to the function as a whole as the bigger picture is occasionally easier to understand) with

visual images to demonstrate what is going on. This is definitely a book that caters to those just getting

started with the hopes not to scare anyone off while still providing a decent amount of information. In today's

world where more and more people are looking to learn more about what makes the internet tick, the inviting

style of this book is invaluable.

I should state that I opted to buy the color version of this book. The content of the book remains the same,

but the code has syntax highlighting which makes it easier to skim through at a glance and separate what is

going on visually. Also, the example images are bright and vibrant which adds to the playful and fun nature

of the book. These may seem like minor points, but they add details that show just how much thought was

put into this book. The color version could certainly be considered the full experience.

Cons: The book allows you to check out examples of the code in action, but only by typing in the full URL

into the address bar manually and viewing the page online. It would have been nice to have one URL that

linked to a ZIP download of all the example files organized by chapter/tutorial then have the book reference

those files reminiscent to the old Friends of Ed Books back in the days of Flash MX...I'm sure Kirupa knows

what I'm talking about! Papercuts (pesky non e-books!)

Pseudo Cons: It's been stated that there is no index, making this a difficult book to use a reference. The

author has responded that this will be corrected in the future, so it might not be a con by the time you read

this. Also, much of the content of this book is available for free at Kirupa's website. This is a gleaming

example of Kirupa's mission to have accessible learning tools at your disposal. He's definitely an advocate of

education/self-education and supporting those who are trying to learn. I state this as a pseudo con because

supporting the author by purchasing his book is always a good thing to do and having an offline reference is

always good as well. After all, there's a reason you are looking at books on Amazon and not looking at

results in a search engine right now. I personally like to read these books away from the computer, taking

notes and learning before attempting at the computer. Lastly would be that the example images are great, but

often seem oversized, causing the content to be divided across multiple pages which can make the text

tedious to skim through when searching for something specific.

If only more coding books were written as well!

By W. Lee

I'm in the UK, and had to get this books delivered from America (along with one of Kurupa's other books).

That should tell you something about them.

I've followed Kirupa for some time on his website (back when it was primarily about Actionscript), and he

has always been one of the few people able to explain complex or simple coding principles in a way that is

easy to understand. All too often I have read about how to do something on other sites, been completely

confused, found an example by Kirupa, and rolled my eyes at how simple it really was. It just needed

explaining by someone who understands that even good programmers often need to learn things in simple

terms, before they can understand them.

Kirupa also has a great sense of humour that permeates his descriptions and explanations, so that you always

feel there's a person behind all this, helping you along without judging how stupid you are, if you don't get

one or two bits straight away.

What else can I say? If you are experienced in coding, but want to get into (or back into) Javascript and/or

CSS, or you're just an absolute beginner, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Kirupa's books.
