To answer complaints that the FE and PE exams are not relevant to the practice of biomedical engineering, there has been much discussion about the need for a biomedical engineering–specific exam.

CBET Exam Eligibility
To take the CBET exam, you must meet at least ONE of the minimum eligibility requirements:.
1) You must have an associate degree or higher in a biomedical equipment technology program and two years of full-time BMET work experience.
2) You must have completed a US military biomedical equipment technology program and two years’ full-time BMET work ex.

The CBET exam contains 165 multiple-choice questions and has a time limit of 3 hours.

To register for the CBET, you must first fill out an application on the ACI website.
The completed application, registration form, and fees must be submitted at least 15 days before the exam date.
The examination fee is $200 for ACI members and $250 for non-members.

How The CBET Exam Is Scored
Your CBET score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly.
To pass, you must answer at least 116 questions correctly out of 165.

Is there a specialty exam for Biomedical Engineering?
There is not currently a specialty exam for the biomedical specialty, so candidates will need to take and pass a test in a related engineering discipline.
Professional standards can be rigorous, but they are generally set by the individual employer.

Retaking The CBET Exam
If you failed the exam and wish to retake it, you must wait at least 60 days.
You will be permitted to take the exam three times in a two-year period, and if you fail on the third attempt, you must wait one year before reapplying to take the exam.

Latecomers will be regarded as “no shows” and will forfeit all exam fees paid.
