What is the Medical Physics Group?

We are a medical physics group led by Sangeeta Murugkar in the Department of Physics at Carleton University.
We develop optical imaging techniques for rapid disease diagnosis and monitoring; to advance understanding of fundamental mechanisms of cellular response; as well as to improve techniques for high-spatial resolution radiation dosimetry.

Rare human genetic lysosomal storage disorder

Fabry disease, also known as Anderson–Fabry disease, is a rare genetic disease that can affect many parts of the body, including the kidneys, heart, brain, and skin.
Fabry disease is one of a group of conditions known as lysosomal storage diseases.
The genetic mutation that causes Fabry disease interferes with the function of an enzyme that processes biomolecules known as sphingolipids, leading to these substances building up in the walls of blood vessels and other organs.
It is inherited in an X-linked manner.

Group of proteins

High-Mobility Group or HMG is a group of chromosomal proteins that are involved in the regulation of DNA-dependent processes such as
transcription, replication, recombination, and DNA repair.
