Ubc biosafety permit

  • Any Risk Group 2 or higher biohazardous material imported into Canada requires an import permit from the Public Health Agency of Canada and/or the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
In addition, they and the Tri-Council granting agencies, require the tracking of all materials transferred in or out of the laboratory.
Obtain a Biosafety Permit through the UBC Research Information System (RISe) prior to using, handling, storing and disposing any hazardous material. If you already have an account, you can directly log into the RISe website. Provide an authorized users list both on site and within the RISe on-line system.
Biosafety permits are required if human tissues, cells, blood or other fluids are removed for the purposes of further study. If the testing and work is all performed by an accredited lab (like LifeLabs) then biosafety is not required.

Does UBC require a biosafety permit?

Any researcher (clinical or not) performing tests on human blood, tissues, cells, and other body fluids in UBC research space will fall under the Biosafety Program and require the following:

  • Biosafety permits are required if human tissues
  • cells
  • blood or other fluids are removed for the purposes of further study.
  • How do I obtain a biosafety permit?

Obtain a Biosafety Permit through the UBC Research Information System (RISe) prior to using, handling, storing and disposing of any hazardous material.
Provide an authorized users list both on site and within the RISe online system.

What happens if a permit holder moves away from UBC?

When a Permit Holder is planning to move away from the use of biological material or away from UBC, their permit must be terminated.
To end a permit, Permit Holders select termination in the RISe system with a statement of intent to end the permit.
