Aav2 biosafety

  • Is AAV a BSL-2?

Historically, the IBC has assigned all work with AAV/rAAV to Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) or Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL-2)..

  • Is AAV a bsl2?

Historically, the IBC has assigned all work with AAV/rAAV to Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) or Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL-2)..

  • AAV is found in multiple vertebrate species, including human and non-human primates (NHPs).
The current consensus is that AAV does not cause any human diseases.
  • AAV2 is transmitted through the air and is generally considered non-pathogenic.
AAV2 persists in an episomal form in the cell but also integrates into human DNA and stays quiescent until new infection with a helper virus occurs.

What does AAV2/5 mean?

These serotypes are denoted using a slash, so that AAV2/5 indicates a virus containing the genome of serotype 2 packaged in the capsid from serotype 5.
Use of these pseudotyped viruses can improve transduction efficiency, as well as alter tropism.

When can adeno-associated virus & AAV vectors be handled at Biosafety Level 1?

Adeno-associated virus and AAV vectors may be handled at Biosafety Level 1 (BSL-1) and Animal Biosafety Level 1 (ABSL-1) when they are:

  • Made in the absence of helper virus (such as :
  • Adenovirus and Herpes virus) Free of any hazardous transgenes (such as :
  • an oncogene
  • toxin
  • shRNA from tumor suppressors
  • etc.) .
