  • What is IBSC and its work?

An IBSC is to be constituted by every organisation engaged in research, handling and production activities related to GMOs and each IBSC has a nominee appointed by DBT.
The role of IBSCs is extremely important as it is a Statutory Committee that operates from premises of respective organisation..

  • What is IBSC in biosafety?

This Committee shall be constituted by all institutions handling hazardous microorganisms and/or GE organisms.
The Committee will be the nodal point for implementation of the biosafety guidelines and for the interactions within the institution..

  • What is the full form of IBSC?

    INSTITUTIONAL BIOSAFETY COMMITTEE (IBSC).

  • What is the purpose of IBSC?

The IBSC is responsible for reviewing projects that involve, but are not limited to, recombinant DNA, RNAi, pathogens, human materials (specimen's repositories) and other potentially infectious material, as well as transgenic animals, genetically modified plants and seeds, CRISPER and Gene knockouts, bacterial and .

  • What is the role of IBSC in transgenic research?

The purpose of IBSC, IASST is to implement the rules, regulations and guidelines to monitor the biosafety aspects of research, large-scale experiments/production/field release, exchange (inter-state and inter-institutional supply/receipt within India), import and export activities carried out in IASST (and other .

  • What is the role of RCGM in biosafety?

Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation (RCGM): This committee shall function in the Department of Biotechnology to monitor the safety related aspects in respect of on-going research projects and activities involving genetically engineered organisms/hazardous microorganisms..

  • An IBC protocol is submitted by the Principal Investigator (PI) and is a comprehensive risk assessment of work involving biohazards or recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules.
  • As per the ''Rules 1989'', State/UT Biotechnology Coordination Committees and District Level Committees are responsible for monitoring instances of illegal cultivation of GM crops and taking appropriate action under Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  • Institutional Biosafety Committee: This committee has been delegated authority to take decisions on applications of import, export and exchange of GMOs and product thereof for R&D purposes under the Environment (Protection) Act 1986.
  • Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RDAC)
An IBSC is to be constituted by every organisation engaged in research, handling and production activities related to GMOs and each IBSC has a nominee appointed
IBSC is the nodal point for interaction within an organisation for implementation of the biosafety regulatory framework. An IBSC is to be constituted by every organisation engaged in research, handling and production activities related to GMOs and each IBSC has a nominee appointed by DBT.

Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee

Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) [formerly known as Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) name changed through Gazette notification, G.S.R No. 613 dated 16th July 2010], has been established under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
The major functions of GEAC as prescribed in the Rules 1989 are: .

Institutional Biosafety Committee

This Committee shall be constituted by all institutions handling hazardous microorganisms and/or GE organisms.
The Committee will be the nodal point for implementation of the biosafety guidelines and for the interactions within the institution.
The Committee shall comprise of the Head of the Institution, Scientists engaged in the recombinant DNA wo.

RCGM Meeting Schedule - 2021-22

TERMS OF REFERENCE (TOR) OF RCGM As per the Rules for the manufacture, use, import, export & storage of hazardous microorganisms, genetically engineered organisms or cells, 1989 notified under the Environment (Protection)Act, 1986 and as amended from time to time, the Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation (RCGM) shall function in the Department .

Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee

This Committee is set up and functions in the Department of Biotechnology with a role to; i.Review developments in Biotechnology at national and international levels. ii.Shall recommend suitable andappropriate safety regulations for India in recombinant research, use and applications from time to time. iii.Evolve long-term policy for research and d.

Review Committee on Genetic Manipulation

This Committee shall function from the Department of Biotechnology to monitor the safety related aspect in respect of on-going research projects or activities involving hazardous microorganisms, GE organisms and cells and products thereof.
The RCGM shall include representatives of (a) Department of Biotechnology (b) Indian Council of Medical Resear.

State Biotechnology Co-Ordination Committee

The State Biotechnology Co-ordination Committee (SBCC) is a monitoring committee at State level.
It shall have powers: i.To inspect, investigate and to take punitive action in case of violations of statutory provisions through the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) or the Directorate of Health etc. ii.To review periodically the safety and control.

What is a Biosafety Committee?

The Committee will be the nodal point for implementation of the biosafety guidelines and for the interactions within the institution.
The Committee shall comprise of the Head of the Institution, Scientists engaged in the recombinant DNA work, a medical doctor and a nominee of the Department of Biotechnology.

What is the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)?

It also represents the interests of the surrounding community with respect to public health and protection of the environment.
Please make note of the 2023 Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Calendar.
The IBC meets once every month, on the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Why is biosafety important in a research laboratory?

At the R&D stage, organisms used in the research laboratory may be pathogenic to humans and/ or harmful to the environment.
Experiments could involve organisms and/or inserts, which may be injurious to the health of the workers.
It is therefore extremely important that the research and laboratory staff is well trained in biosafety measures.
