  • What is the history of Botany Bay Beach?

    History.
    Botany Bay is linked with the history of smugglers.
    In 1769 smuggler Joss Snelling and his gang were caught with contraband on the beach by the Revenue Patrol, after a fierce fight Joss escaped.
    Joss survived to become an old man, who was introduced to Princess Victoria on a visit to the area..

This sandy beach is deservedly popular with clean sands and a Blue Flag award for water quality. It was named after Botany Bay in Australia as local smugglers were caught on the beach and deported to Botany Bay, hence the name. The bay is very attractive with chalk cliffs, golden sands and some rock pools.

Does Botany Bay have a cafe?

The beach has a cafe but unfortunately the toilet facilities often have long queues.
Despite these minor niggles, the beach remains very popular.
As well as being popular for sandcastles and beach sports, Botany Bay is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, swimming, sunbathing, fossil hunting, body boarding and kite-flying.

Does Botany Bay have cliff views?

Botany Bay is renowned for its incredible cliff views, which are definitely a sight to behold.
While the beach was very busy when I went, its size meant that there was still plenty of space.
The water was relatively cold, and the rocky ground can mean it is a bit annoying to get out into the deep water, but the view is something to behold.

How do I get to Botany Bay from London?

To get to Botany Bay from London, you can take a train, bus, or car.
Trains to Broadstairs depart from St Pancras station and London Victoria station, with trips taking between 1.5 to 2 hours.
Buses to Broadstairs depart from London Victoria Coach station and travelling time sits at around 3 hours.

What is Botany Bay famous for?

One of our most photographed bays, Botany Bay is famous for its stunning views of white cliffs and beautiful chalk stacks.
When the tide is out, Botany Bay is a great location for fossil hunting and exploring rock pools.
There is plenty of exposed sand to enjoy when the tide is in, but due to the bay's shape the ends are cut off at high tide.
