Where's botany bay

  • Why is Botany Bay called that?

On 6 May 1770, Cook changed the name in his journal.
First to 'Botanist's Bay', before settling on 'Botany Bay' because of the 'great quantity of new plants … collected by Mr Banks and Dr Solander'..

  • Its purpose was to find a convict settlement on the east coast of Australia, at Botany Bay.
The First Fleet sailed from England on 13 May 1787 and arrived at Botany Bay eight months later, on 18 January 1788.
  • The bay was the site in 1770 of Captain James Cook's first landing in Australia.
He named it Stingray Harbour but later changed the name because of the variety of new plants found there by his expedition's naturalist, Joseph (later Sir Joseph) Banks.Sep 30, 2023
