Course Description

This course analyzes issues associated with the implementation of higher-level programming languages.
Topics covered include: fundamental concepts, functions, and structures of compilers, the interaction of theory and practice, and using tools in building software.
The course includes a multi-person project on compiler design and implementation.

What is an example of a cross compiler?

Cross compilers are used for embedded development, where the target computer has limited capabilities.
An early example of cross compilation was AIMICO, where a FLOW-MATIC program on a UNIVAC II was used to generate assembly language for the IBM 705, which was then assembled on the IBM computer.
