How to study law abroad

Students currently enrolled at an ABA-approved law school who desire to receive credit toward their J.D. degree for study abroad should read carefully the applicable Criteria for their course of study and should consult with members of the law school staff or faculty who advise students about foreign study.

Transfer students who have completed their first year at another law school are eligible to study abroad in their 3L year.
J.D. students who are foreign nationals will not be approved for study abroad in the country in which they have received a first degree in law.

Choose from established programs with overseas law schools or petition to study at the foreign law school of your choice.
Only overseas study gives you first-hand exposure to foreign legal cultures and the chance to earn an appreciation for the role law plays in other societies.

Especially if you're enrolling in a semester or year-long program, make sure the courses on offer will satisfy requirements, both general and for your major, at your home university.
Going abroad could potentially interfere with law school application timelines and studying for the LSAT.
