The 1973 Code of Criminal Process establishes the necessary machinery for apprehending offenders, investigating criminal cases, putting them before Criminal Courts, and punishing the guilty individual. It provides the machinery for the investigation of crime, apprehension of suspected criminals, collection of evidence, determination of guilt or innocence of the accused person and the determination of punishment of the guilty.The erstwhile Code of Criminal Procedure,1898 was repealed by the existing Code of Criminal Procedure,1973. There are many amendments affected to the new code from 1978 to 2013. The Code came into existence w.e.f. 1st. April, 1973 and contains 484 sections divided into 37 chapters, and two schedules.
