Crystallography in geology

Traditionally, crystallography is the study of crystals and describing them according to geometrical observations. This involves measurement of the crystal faces in relation to their imaginary crystal axes (using a goniometer) and symmetry.

A. V. Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography

The A.
V.
Shubnikov Institute of Crystallography is a scientific institute of the Department of Physical Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) located in Moscow, Russia.
The institute was created by the order of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR on 16nowrap> November 1943.
The first director of the Institute was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Alexei Vasilievich Shubnikov.
In 1969, the institute was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
Crystallography in geology
Crystallography in geology
In geology, texture or rock microstructure refers to the relationship between the materials of which a rock is composed.
The broadest textural classes are crystalline, fragmental, aphanitic, and glassy.
The geometric aspects and relations amongst the component particles or crystals are referred to as the crystallographic texture or preferred orientation.
Textures can be quantified in many ways.
The most common parameter is the crystal size distribution.
This creates the physical appearance or character of a rock, such as grain size, shape, arrangement, and other properties, at both the visible and microscopic scale.
