  • How do I enable compression in NetApp?

Use the volume efficiency modify command to enable data compression with the default compression type.
Use the volume efficiency modify command at the advanced privilege level to enable data compression with a specific compression type.Jun 27, 2022.

  • How does NetApp deduplication work?

It scans all the data blocks in the aggregate and eliminates duplicates by comparing fingerprints of the blocks and by doing a byte-by-byte comparison to eliminate any false positives.
This procedure also ensures that there is no data loss during the deduplication operation..

  • What is compression in NetApp?

Compression reduces the amount of physical storage required for a volume by combining data blocks in compression groups, each of which is stored as a single block.Oct 14, 2021.

  • What is compression in NetApp?

NetApp data compression reduces the physical capacity required to store data on storage systems by compressing data within a flexible volume (FlexVol\xae volume) on primary, secondary, and archive storage..

  • What is the difference between deduplication and compression in NetApp?

NetApp deduplication is a process that can be scheduled to run when it is most convenient, while NetApp data compression has the ability to run either as an inline process as data is written to disk or as a scheduled process..

  • Compression is effective in decreasing the size of unique files, such as images, videos and databases.
While deduplication typically works at the block level, compression tends to work at the file level.
While deduplication and compression are storage-focused, encryption is more of a security feature.

NetApp data compression reduces the physical capacity required to store data on storage systems by compressing data within a flexible volume (FlexVol® volume) on primary, secondary, and archive storage. It compresses regular files, virtual local disks, and LUNs.
The NetApp compression algorithm divides a file into chunks of data called “compression groups.” Compression groups are a maximum of 32KB in size. For example, a file that is 60KB in size would be contained within two compression groups. The first would be 32KB and the second 28KB.

Does NetApp Support deduplication & data compression on V-series systems?

Note:

  1. NetApp deduplication and data compression on V-Series systems with array LUNs are supported using block checksum scheme (BCS) and
  2. starting in Data ONTAP 8
1.1, also using zone checksum scheme (ZCS).
For more information, refer to TR-3461:V-Series Best Practice Guide.

What is data compression?

Data compression is a Data ONTAP feature that enables you to reduce the physical capacity that is required to store data on storage systems by compressing the data blocks within a FlexVol volume.
You can use data compression only on volumes contained within 64-bit aggregates.

Why does NetApp use inline compression before deduplication?

In the NetApp implementation, compression is run before deduplication.
This provides us with the ability to use inline compression to get immediate space savings from compression followed by additional savings from deduplication.

How can NetApp's Cloud Volumes ONTAP help you save space?

With NetApp’s Cloud Volumes ONTAP, Azure users gain a number of space-reducing and cost-saving efficiencies, including storage deduplication, data compression, data compaction, snapshot copies, data clones, and more

In this article we take a look at all of these technologies to help you reduce your storage spend on Azure
